Doris "Pug" Ann (Horsch) Ast passed June 20, 2025 at Via Christi Village in Wichita, Kansas.
She was born in Andale, Kansas, to Peter and Mary (Heimerman) Horsch, Jr. August 7, 1925. She attended Andale High School and Marymount College in Salina. She then attended Penrose-Seton School of Nursing in Colorado Springs. She worked in Colorado at a tuberculosis sanitorium before furthering her education at Creighton University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She worked as a Public Health Nurse in Wichita. She served as an orthopedic nurse and a hospital nursing supervisor at St. Elizabeth's and Hutchinson Hospital. She was an office nurse with Dr. Joseph Stech in Andale for many years before retiring from nursing. She married Raphael Ast December 27, 1950.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ost, Kansas. She was active in the Altar Society and other aspects of church life. She loved quilting, rose gardening, baking and was famous for her tea ring. She attended her children's and grandchildren's numerous sporting events. She was an avid reader and loved to learn. She enjoyed all of this, while continuing her second career as wife, of a wheat and dairy farmer.
She is survived by: her sons and daughters, Peg (Tom) Garthright of Foxfield, Colorado, Jim (Sandy) Ast of Ingalls, Kansas, Mari (Brad) Starnes of Riley, Kansas, Joyce (Dean) Lasseter of Columbia, Missouri, Tom (Karla) Ast of Ingalls, Kansas, Becky (Carl) Hermreck of Wichita, Kansas and David (Kristy) Ast of Cimarron, Kansas; sister, Lorraine Rorick of Colorado Springs, Colorado; twenty grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Ray; five brothers and sisters, Eluta, Raymond, Stanley, Frank and Bernice; and grandson, Jeremy Starnes.
The visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain, 911 Biermann, Garden Plain, KS 67050. The rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2025 and mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. both at St. Joseph Ost Catholic Church, 13015 E. Maple Grove Rd. Mt. Hope, KS 67108. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, 13015 E. Maple Grove Rd. Mt. Hope, KS 67108 and Phoenix Hospice 3450 N Rock Rd. Bldg. 200, Suite 213, Wichita, KS 67226.
