She grew up and received her schooling in Chokio, Minnesota, graduating from Chokio High School in 1950. Doris attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, graduating with her degree in accounting in March 1951. She then worked for Otter Tail Power Company for a short time before she was united in marriage to Myron Benson. The couple was married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chokio on August 25, 1951. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm in the Hancock area. Doris was a very active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Morris, serving on various committees, including 11 years as treasurer for the Women of Faith. Myron passed away on November 15, 1991, and Doris has continued living in Morris since that time. On December 31, 1995, Doris retired from the UMM Business Office after 30 years of dedicated service. Since her retirement, she has enjoyed traveling, continuing her activities at Faith Lutheran Church and volunteering for 10 years at nursing homes as an Ombudsman Advocate. She also loved raising her flowers (especially roses), scrapbooking, reading, crocheting, listening to music and spending time with her family.
