Doris Chalfant Obituary

Doris Meyer Chalfant
05/23/1928 - 01/15/2026
On January 15, 2026, Doris Meyer Chalfant passed away peacefully at the age of 97, after spending the day surrounded by loved ones in her home in Midland, Texas. Doris will be remembered as an adoring mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Doris was born on May 23, 1928, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to Arthur and Fern Meyer. She grew up with a love of learning that stayed with her throughout her life. Doris earned her bachelor's degree in history from the University of Oklahoma, a place she held dear and where she met the love of her life, Wesley Chalfant. On July 29, 1950, Wesley and Doris were married, and their marriage was the ideal example of devotion and faith for 67 fulfilling years. Wesley and Doris loved to travel the world just as much as they cherished their weekly Tuesday Night Supper Club at Midland Country Club and sitting in the same pew at First Presbyterian Church every Sunday.
A devoted mother to Bill Chalfant, Susan O'Brien, and Emily Morrow, Doris made family the center of her life. She treasured nearly 50 summers vacationing in Ruidoso, New Mexico, and later delighted in her roles as "Nana" to seven grandchildren and as great-grandmother to sixteen.
Doris was deeply involved in her community and church. She gave generously of her time as a member of the PTA, First Presbyterian Church, and as a longtime Sunday School teacher. She continued playing handbells into her 90s, a testament to her joyful and devoted spirit. She also served as a docent at the Petroleum Museum and was active in the Garden Club, Bridge Club and Study Club, forming lifelong friendships along the way.
Those who knew Doris knew her as steady, kind, and quietly faithful. She never sought attention and never spoke unkindly of others. She was a true servant at heart, without ever needing recognition. Doris especially loved Christmas. She found joy in family gatherings and traditions, like attending Round The Table Carol Sing for 50+ years at First Presbyterian Church with her family. She never missed an opportunity to wear festive earrings and always had perfectly polished bright nails.
Her long life was made full by her family, friends and her faith. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her kind spirit. "Well done good and faithful servant" Doris is preceded in death by her husband Wesley. She is survived by her children Bill Chalfant (Katherine); Susan O'Brien (Mike); and Emily Morrow (Tom); grandchildren Paul Chalfant, Matthew Chalfant (Amber), Leslie Ortloff, Andrew Lawson (Atina), Alicia Hudson (Seth), Melissa Johnson (Trevor), and Wesley Ware (Jenny); sixteen great-grandchildren and her sister, Eileen Burke.
A private memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Midland.
The family gratefully acknowledges Virginia Belanger and Sloan Davidson for their compassionate care and for treating Doris like family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Doris may be directed to First Presbyterian Church of Midland, 800 W. Texas, Midland, Texas 79701: Manor Park, 5212 Sinclair Avenue, Midland, Texas 79707; or Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas, Midland, Texas 79701.
