Doris Jean Foss, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, in
Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Doris was born on February 16, 1935, in
Aberdeen, SD, to Everett R. and Helen L. (Werth) Cloos. She grew up in Warner, SD, where she attended school and graduated with the Warner High School Class of 1953. Doris went on to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics in 1957.
Following college, Doris began her career working for Deuel County in Clear Lake, SD. On June 19, 1960, she married the love of her life, Dale A. Foss, in Aberdeen. The couple moved to St. Paul, MN, where Doris worked as a secretary while Dale completed veterinary school. Together, they later made their home in Sisseton, SD, until 1978, then Milbank, SD, before finally settling in Aberdeen in 1991, where they lived out their years surrounded by family and friends.
Faith was always an important part of Doris's life. She was an active and devoted member of her church, where she joyfully sang in the choir, participated in Circle, and served wherever she was needed. Her generosity of spirit and willingness to help others were evident in everything she did.
Doris had a love for music, especially when it came from her family. She cherished listening to her daughter-in-law and granddaughters play piano and sing. She also enjoyed bowling, spending time with loved ones, and making a warm, welcoming home for all who entered. Doris also loved animals-especially cats-and she cared for numerous feline companions throughout her life who brought her great comfort and joy.
Doris is survived by her three children: sons Mark (Renee) Foss of
Aberdeen, SD, and Lynn (Nancy) Foss of Fargo, ND; and daughter Karen (Clif) Foss Bradford of North Salt Lake, UT. She was a proud grandmother to Marnee (Nick) Hauck, Robynn Foss, and Lynndale Foss. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Carolyn (Richard) Kvidera; nephews Steven (Sandy) Kvidera, Douglas (Amy) Kvidera, and Glenn Kvidera; and niece Celeste (John) Davis.
Preceding Doris in death were her beloved husband, Dale A. Foss; her parents, Everett R. and Helen L. Cloos; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, MaryLou and Allen Radtke; and her nephew, James Radtke.
Doris will be remembered for her quiet strength, gentle heart, steadfast faith, and deep love of family and animals. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and grace that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
