Doris Garrett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home - East Louisville on Nov. 30, 2024.
Doris C. Garrett, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on May 15, 1945, in Columbia, South Carolina, Doris was the daughter of the late J.P. Carter and Ethel Oree Carter.
Doris was a lifelong learner, a trait she carried with pride throughout her life. In her early career, she was a high school teacher in Columbia, South Carolina. Doris was passionate about learning new things, whether it was taking piano lessons or mastering the intricacies of DOS operating systems. Her curiosity never wavered, and she found joy in gaining new knowledge every day.
Doris moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where she began working as a medical technician at the VA hospital. It was there she met the love of her life, Darrell L. Garrett, Sr. They married and built a life together filled with love and shared experiences. Doris had a quick wit and a quiet, dry sense of humor. She was a woman of few words, but when she spoke, you knew exactly what was on her mind. Her straightforward humor always left you wondering if she was serious or pulling your leg.
Thanksgiving and Christmas were Doris's favorite holidays. She adored the festive spirit of the season, and Christmas music was a constant in her car as soon as the holiday season began. Doris's devotion to family, especially to her grandchildren, was unwavering. Her grandchildren fondly called her "Grandma Kentucky," a nickname that spoke to both her love for them and her Southern roots.
Sadly, Doris's beloved husband, Darrell L. Garrett, Sr., passed away earlier this year, in March 2024. She is now reunited with him, where they will once again share their love and memories together.
Doris is survived by her daughter, S. Carter Garrett Matienzo, son, Darrell L. Garrett, Jr., and grandchildren: Lynnex Garrett, Octavian Matienzo, and Kira Matienzo. She is also survived by her sister, Ethel (Heyward) Wood; brother, J.P. (Henrietta) Carter, Jr.; and sister, Toynetta Carter.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, East Louisville (12900 Shelbyville Road).
Doris will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love and learning will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
