Doris J. Gash, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and remarkable woman, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Parker in Monroe Township, with her family at her side. She was 97.
Born in New Brunswick, on March 15, 1928, she grew up in Edison and was a lifelong resident of East Brunswick with her late husband, Job. She was a member of Seaside Park Yacht Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
She attended Clara Barton School and New Brunswick High School. Doris graduated from Rider College in just 3 years in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting while commuting and working part-time. She was a member of the National Association of Cost Accountants. Doris was an exceptional student and loved learning.
Following graduation, she was employed as a junior cost accountant at Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick. Her true calling developed once she went back to school to become a teacher. Doris taught 2nd & 3rd grade for over 30 years. Beginning her teaching career in Edison, she spent 25 of those 30 plus years at Central School in East Brunswick.
Doris loved to travel with family and friends. She cruised around the world, drove across the United States and traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada and all throughout Europe. Doris treasured her times sitting on the porch of the Yacht Club with her friends. She was a volunteer at the East Brunswick Library and enjoyed activities at the Senior Center.
Doris’ greatest love was spending time with her children and grandchildren, and she cherished times in Seaside Park and trips to Walt Disney World. Her great-grandchildren brought renewed wonderment and tears of joy in her later years. Doris loved reading mysteries and feeding the birds in her backyard. She was a passionate cardplayer, be it Bridge, Michigan Rummy, Canasta or any number of Solitaire games – all of which she taught to her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, growing beautiful hydrangeas, rhododendrons, azaleas and irises. For her children, Doris even gave skiing a try down at Beech Mountain, NC and sailing on the Barnegat Bay. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Cora Swales and Eiler Rasmussen and her husband, Job L. Gash Sr (d. 2012).
Surviving are her loving children, her son and daughter-in-law Job and Karen Derian Gash of East Brunswick, NJ, her daughter and son-in-law Doris Ann and Joseph D’Ambrisi of Trumbull, CT; her beloved grandchildren Stephen (Annie) D’Ambrisi of Fairfield, CT, Kirsten (Dalton) Earley of Laketown UT, Kelly (Omri) Rachmut of Lyons, CO, Jacob (Alyssa) Gash of Park City, UT, Matthew (Betsy) D’Ambrisi of Princeton, NJ; her great grandchildren Jack, Francie, Aubrey, Eva, Noah, Colter, Claire and Lucy; her sister Jean Gash; her cousin Ruth Gastner and many relatives and friends.
