Doris Elizabeth Vaughn Goodwin was born on December 27, 1937 in Columbia, SC. She passed away peacefully at age 86 on August 13, 2024 at her home in Hawley, PA.
Doris graduated from C.A. Johnson High School, in Columbia, SC in 1955. After graduating HS, she followed her brother JP and moved to Harlem. Doris attended Bronx Community College while working at Bloomingdales. She worked for the state of New York and retired in 1996. After retiring, she found a passion for mentoring and caring for children. She remained very close with Diamond Christian and her mother Ana.
Doris was an adoring mother with a zest for life. She raised her loving sons Keith and Jay in Harlem and then the Bronx. Doris re-connected with John Goodwin in her early sixties, and moved back to South Carolina to be with John. They married in 2003, where they lived and loved until John passed in 2017.
Doris was a mother of the church of St. Peter's Baptist Church in Irmo, SC and an active member of the community. She had a radiant smile and a joyful outlook on life, which impacted everyone around her. She fulfilled her bucket list trip to Paris, France with her granddaughter in the summer of 2022. Doris moved from Sacramento, CA in the fall of 2023 and spent her last year in the Pocono Mountains, PA with Jay, Jackie and Milli.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth Lucy Reese Vaughn and John P. Vaughn, Jr., sister Karen Reese, brother John Paul Vaughn and her loving husband John Lewis Goodwin.
Her memory will always be treasured by her sons, Jay Jones (Jackie Nagel); Keith Jones (Julie Allen); daughter Jackie Goodwin Williams (Horace); brothers Martin Vaughn (Terri) and Vincent Vaughn (Jackie); granddaughters, Johnette Isabelle Jones (Teresa Jones); Lauren Williams, Jeneice Goodwin; grandsons Anthony Johnican, Jayden Williams, Joshua Goodwin, James and Joseph Goodwin; nephews Martin Vaughn II (Meredith) and Marcus Vaughn; nieces Anita Vaughn, Velissa Vaughn, Marquis Vaughn and Mikayla Vaughn; cousins Mary Alice Williams (Roger), Dr. James (Tunky) Hatcher, William Davis (Frazier); close lifelong friends Linda Turner and Joan Walker; and goddaughter Monica Walker. She had many other devoted family members, cousins and friends, whom she loved dearly, including her grandpup Milli, who she affectionally called "grandma's little girl".
