On December 22nd, Doris Ann Hilton stepped into a new body. One not ravaged by cancer. She was an 18-year breast cancer survivor. Doris had plans like we all do even at 85 years of age and was always on the move. She received a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer in November and simply stated, “such is life, I’m not going to sit around and cry about it.” That was our mom, and she didn’t. She accepted her fate and kept her dignity throughout the journey. Days of telling us she felt fine eventually turned into not so much and needing around the clock care and supervision. Our mom ready to go, knew where she was going after this life, and literally broke free from her body with her family by her side. She is free. Cancer lost.
Doris was born on May 22nd, 1939, in Hagerstown, MD to the late Clyde and Gladys Holsinger. She graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1957, Hagerstown Community College in 1959, and Shepherd College in 1961. She was the first member of her family to graduate college. Doris was a charter member of Paramount Baptist Church where she participated in many ministries over her lifetime. She retired from IBM after 28 years of service in 1994, then from Real Estate in 2009 to care for her husband, the late James Hilton. Doris was an active member of the Maugansville Ruritan Club and recently achieved nine years of perfect attendance.
She is survived a sister, Carole Spickler, her daughter Michelle Haden and spouse Ty Haden, and her son Michael Hilton and spouse Joi Hilton. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Adam and Aaron Haden and Lily and Henry Hilton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held on Sunday, December 29th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Rest Haven Funeral Home and Cemetery located in Hagerstown, MD. Funeral services and internment will be held on Monday, December 30th at 1:00 pm at Rest Haven with Pastor Frank Duncan officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral.
In leu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Maugansville Ruritan Club, 18007 Maugans Ave, Hagerstown, MD 21740, or Paramount Baptist Church, 13234 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, MD 21743.
