Doris Howerton Obituary

Doris Marie Howerton, 95, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2026. She was born on December 12, 1930, in Louisville to Thomas and Rose Ella Brown. She was known as Dodie or Nanny to those who loved her.

Dodie often reflected on her childhood in the Portland neighborhood where she was raised, and proudly shared her memories of surviving the historic 1937 flood at just six years old—a testament to the resilience and strength that would define her life.

She later married Jesse L. Howerton, Jr. following his honorable service in World War II and the Korean War. Together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, and dedication.

Dodie began her working years at the old St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital. She later found her place at Seinsheimer’s, where her talents as a seamstress flourished. Over time, she took on many roles there, always known for her work ethic and skill.

A devoted Catholic, Dodie was a longtime member of Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Church. Even when she was no longer able to attend in person, her faith remained unwavering, and she faithfully participated in televised services to stay connected to her parish community.

Dodie held strong convictions and was a proud Democrat throughout her life. She believed deeply in her values and never hesitated to share them.

Above all, Dodie cherished her family. She shared an especially close bond with her daughter, Beth, and found great comfort in the thought of being reunited with her again. Though she was something of a homebody, Dodie’s face would light up at every visit from her loved ones. She adored her granddaughter and great-grandchildren, treasuring every moment spent with them.

Dodie also had a deep love for her beloved dogs—Rollo, Coquette, and DeeDee—who brought her immense joy and companionship over the years.

Dodie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Jesse Lee Howerton, Jr.; beloved daughter, Beth Howerton Cole; parents, Thomas Brown and Rose Ella Kern Brown; and siblings, Helen, John, Rob, Rose, Gert, Ruth, Albert, and Norma.

Left to cherish her memory, Dodie is survived by her loving granddaughter, Sarah McIntosh (Rusty); great-granddaughters, Ella and Scarlett; brother, Frank Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered for her strength, her faith, her devotion to family, and the enduring love she gave so freely. Dodie leaves behind a legacy of resilience and warmth that will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

A funeral service for Mrs. Doris Marie Howerton will be held at 1:00 PM, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Louisville Memorial Gardens West, 4400 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral service.
