Doris Grant McRae

Doris Grant McRae,82, of Hamlet passed away Monday, December 22, 2025 in Richmond Co. Hospice Haven. She was born July 14, 1943 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Nick and Emma Owens Grant.

She was a graduate of Hamlet High School, Class of 1962. She worked for many years as a waitress, including several years at Michael's Seafood. Of all her jobs, her greatest joy and most cherished role was being "Grandma" to her grandchildren that she lovingly babysat throughout the years.

She was a devoted member of Marks Creek Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir, was actively involved in Presbyterian Women, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and taught Sunday school.

She treasured time spent with her family, especially Sunday lunches surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She also loved vacations to the mountains and the beach, shopping trips to Kohl's -where she proudly kept up with the latest fashion trends - and faithfully attending every event involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In quieter moments, she found joy rocking on the porch and sharing stories from the past while watching the cars go by.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 29, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ken Goins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A public viewing will be held prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends during a reception following the funeral in the church fellowship hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Melrose Grant Sr. and James "Jim" Grant.

Surviving, her husband of 63 years, George Dewey McRae, Jr. of the home; children, George Dewey McRae, III and wife Judy of Hamlet, Jamie Lynn McRae and wife Joyce of Rockingham and Laurie McRae Waters and husband Scott of Hamlet; grandchildren, Adam McRae, Kaylin Wiggins, Madalyn McRae, Joseph McRae, Emily Rowell, Jenna McRae, Jacey McRae and Leah Waters and nine great grandchildren.
