Doris Marie Riemer

Doris Marie Riemer (nee Mitchell), 97, died peacefully at the Swift Creek Health Center on November 8, 2024.Born in East Boston, Mass., the fifth of six children, Doris was raised by her loving parents, Lillian and Percy, and her adoring older siblings.Known as "Mom" (and at times, lovingly "Mum") to her children, and "Nanny" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her legacy is one of love and beauty. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, whose greatest pride was the family she built. The special bond she shared with each person she loved was always felt and cherished dearly no matter the distance.A devoted wife, her marriage of nearly 75 years to her beloved Pete served as both the bedrock of the family and as an example of the most beautiful true-love story and partnership. They loved to travel with beloved family and friends, and they had a fondness for musicals and dance. Theirs was a love for the ages.She was an Irish beauty (with the luck to match!), always with a twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. No outfit was complete without a manicure and the right accessories. She took pride in maintaining a well-kept home and was known by those she loved for her beautiful charcuterie spreads and table settings. Later in life, she found a love for art. Crafting, sketching, and painting were some of her favorite hobbies. It is no surprise that her children and grandchildren inherited a great deal of artistic skill, and her appreciation for beauty lives on in their creations. Though easily scandalized by profanity, Petes stories, and most condiments, Doris was armed with a formidable wit and a knowing look that left no doubt as to who was really in charge. She was also a skillful Scrabble player and an even better baker.While her high school career was interrupted by World War II, Doris relished the experience of earning an associates degree after her children were grown and raising families of their own. Her love of learning inspired others to cherish their educational opportunities.Doris is survived by her four devoted children: Peter Riemer, Jr., of Ridgewood, N.J.; Gayle Hanby of Lady Lake, Fla.; Robert Riemer of Cary, N.C., and Nancy Riemer of Cary, N.C.; her beloved daughter-in-law, Suzanne Taranto, of Ridgewood, N.J.; her dear son-in-law, Vernie Davis, of Cary, N.C.; and her eight adoring grandchildren, two precious great grandchildren, and two loving granddaughters-in-law.Doris will be remembered for the warmth and love she suffused into the lives of everyone who knew her.
