Doris Ann Riser, a beloved matriarch and cherished presence in her family and community, passed away on March 14, 2026, in Madisonville, Louisiana. Born on October 2, 1951, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Doris lived a life marked by love, kindness, and an open heart that touched all who had the privilege to know her.
A legend in her family, Doris was known for her heart of gold and her ability to never meet a stranger. Her outgoing nature and loving spirit made her a central figure—a beacon of warmth and joy. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she poured her love into her family abundantly, leaving a legacy that will carry on through generations.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Riser, who shared his life and love with Doris through many joyful years. Doris’ children—Doris Holmes (James), Hector Echevarria (Melissa), Evette Darby (Joseph), Ernie Barnes, Priscilla Bowden (Chris), and Devin Barnes—carry forward her nurturing spirit and strength. Her grandchildren, Candace Foreman, James Holmes III, Alyssa Roberts, Bailey McNemar, Cody Savoy, Madison Kirkfield, Joseph Darby III, Morgan Bowden, Makenna Bowden, Zander Bowden, and Abigail Barnes, along with countless great-grandchildren, are a testament to the loving family Doris continuously nurtured.
Doris also leaves behind treasured siblings: Illuminado Santiago Jr., Betty Morris, Evelyn Burks, Edith Alford, and aunts such as Eunice Riser, who treasured her deeply. The family circle blossoms further with nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who all felt the light and kindness she shared so freely.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Illuminado Santiago Sr. and Petra Nieves Santiago, who no doubt smile down upon the extraordinary woman their daughter became. She also mourned the loss of her brother Louis Santiago, yet his memory remains strong in the hearts of those left behind.
Services to honor Doris’ remarkable life will be held at Bagnell & Son Funeral Home in Covington, Louisiana. Visitation will take place on March 20, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. These moments will gather those who loved her to celebrate a life so beautifully lived.
Doris Ann Riser’s passing leaves a profound space in the hearts of all who knew her—yet her loving spirit, her laughter, and her boundless generosity ensure that she will never truly be gone. She was, and always will be, a shining light—a heart of gold whose legacy is etched forever in the fabric of her family and community. She truly was a soul who never met a stranger, whose love was a gift to all. May we carry her memory gently and hold it close with the same warmth and grace she gave to us all.
