Doris Rutledge Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carthage Chapel - Jacksonville on Mar. 2, 2026.
A Life of Faith, Purpose, and Love

Doris Yvonne McNair Rutledge was born on August 5, 1937, at Brewster Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, to Jacob and Ella (Barnes) McNair. Raised in a home grounded in faith, education, and service, she carried these guiding principles throughout her life. They shaped her character, strengthened her spirit, and became the foundation of her legacy.

Doris received her early education in Jacksonville and proudly graduated from the historic New Stanton High School. Even as a young woman, her love for learning and her desire to make a difference were evident.

A Devoted Wife, Mother, and Matriarch

Doris married Joseph Rutledge, and together they created a warm, loving, and faith-filled home. Their union was blessed with six children, who became the joy and heartbeat of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rutledge, and three beloved children: Linzerl Earl Rutledge (Elizabeth), Kelvin Rutledge (Lillian), and Angela Rutledge-Peraza. Although they departed before her, Doris carried their memories tenderly and faithfully.

She leaves to cherish her memory her surviving children: Michael Rutledge, Sherri Rutledge, and Kenneth Rutledge, who each embody her compassion, resilience, and devotion. Her legacy continues through nine grandchildren: Linzerl Rutledge Jr., Jasmine Rutledge, Jeffrey Lloyd, Samaiah Peraza-Wyatt, Katiera Davis, Michael A.D. Rutledge, Gabriella Rutledge, Angel Rutledge, and Joseph A.B. Rutledge; and twelve great-grandchildren, who carry forward the light and love she imparted to them.

A Teacher by Profession, A Mentor by Calling

With unwavering determination, Doris pursued her childhood dream of higher education, earning her degree from Edward Waters College. Soon after, she began her career as an elementary school teacher with Duval County Public Schools.

For approximately 30 years, Mrs. Rutledge poured into the lives of countless students, offering encouragement, structure, and an unwavering belief in their potential. Her classroom was a place where every child felt valued, supported, and capable of success. Many remembered her long after leaving her care, an honor that speaks to the enduring power of her influence.

A Woman of Faith and Community

Doris was a faithful member of The Church of the Crucifixion Catholic Church and, previously, of St. Pius Catholic Church, where her devotion to God and service to others grew deeply.

She also served proudly in:

Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc. (Delta Delta Chapter)
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (Beta Alpha Zeta Chapter)
Her commitment to sisterhood, leadership, and service extended far beyond her professional life.

Her Eternal Legacy

Doris lived with quiet strength, gracious dignity, and a heart full of unconditional love. Her wisdom guided many, her kindness uplifted others, and her faith served as a steady foundation through every season of life.

Though she has transitioned from this earthly journey, the love she gave and the lives she touched remain everlasting. Her spirit lives on in her family, her former students, her church community, and all who were blessed to know her.

"Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord."

- Matthew 25:23
