Doris Thompson, born February 23, 1941, in
Indianapolis, Indiana to Doris and Ernie Mueller passed away on December 11 th surrounded by family.
She graduated from Howe High School and then attended Indiana University, where she studied English Education. She then worked at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, where she taught English and was in charge of their theater department. While working there, she got her Master's Degree from Ball State University and began showing her dog, Ember, who won many awards at dog shows all over the country.
One Thanksgiving, Doris' brother-in-law, set up a meeting between David and Doris. The matchmaking paid off, and before long, they were married, and she moved to
Lafayette, Indiana. Doris found a home with some acreage, and the city girl got to experience the country. Over the years, they had a horse, a goat, pigs, sheep, dogs, and cats. She taught a couple years at Sunnyside and Tecumseh Junior High. Then, she was able to stay home and raise her children for ten years. During this time, she loved spending time with her kids and taking family vacations to camp all over the West. Once the children were older, she began teaching English at Harrison High School in West
Lafayette, Indiana. She loved teaching there and helping her students win many awards for their creative writing talents.
Doris enjoyed gardening and was often seen opening her car trunk on Sundays after church to give her friends cantaloupes, zucchini, and tomatoes. She taught herself how to sew and enjoyed making clothes for her loved ones for Christmas gifts. One year, she made all the women in the family a bathrobe. Baking was another passion, and she was well known for her cookies and stollen that she made for the holidays.
After retirement, she and her husband, David, began spending their winters in Bradenton, Florida. They were blessed to be able to do this for over 20 years. She loved going on walks and spending time watching birds, appreciating the beauty of nature. When back in Lafayette, she was very involved in the Tourist club, Retired teachers, and was on the board at Duncan Hall where she enjoyed teaching manners classes to elementary students and making cookies for many of their social functions. She also enjoyed volunteering with
The Salvation Army, including back-to-school shopping and ringing the bell at Christmas time.
She attended Calvary Baptist Church, where she met lifelong friends and enjoyed helping to teach Sunday school classes.
Doris loved being a grandmother and spent a lot of time traveling with her children and grandchildren. She attended many football, baseball, soccer, hockey, marching band, and show choir competitions. She also loved playing games, whether a hand of Euchre or a game of Old Maid, she would laugh and have a wonderful time playing with the family she loved.
Doris leaves behind her husband, David Thompson, daughter D'Lee (Lonny) Barnett of Guilford, Indiana, daughter Deborah (Frederic) Beck of Avon, Indiana, son David (JoDee) Thompson of Fishers, Indiana, and 7 grandchildren.
Her family will be holding a private ceremony, but we appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.
