Doris Unger Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 6, 2026.
Doris Unger, age 95, of Madison, WI, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, surrounded by her family in her final days. Preceded in death by sisters, Caroline Coopersmith and Gloria Dim. Survived by children, Phyllis (Alan), Bill (Corliss), Deborah, and Barbara (Michael); grandchildren, Sam, Joshua, Adam, Ariela, Talia, Aviv, Yoni, and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Zev, Laila, Yael, Tamar, and Maya; and nieces and nephews. Born in New York City, Doris moved to St. Paul in 1949 to marry and start a family. Doris shared her passion for music and art with all her children. An early leader in the Minnesota chapter of the National Organization for Women, she also encouraged political engagement, particularly in women's rights. While raising four children, Doris studied music privately and earned a BA in journalism at the University of Minnesota in 1969. She began a successful journalism and communications career in Minnesota, which she continued in California. Doris loved reading, opera and the arts. Her curiosity about the world led her to a safari in Kenya, travels across China, and exploring France on her own. In 1992, she traveled with family across Australia. She later moved back to Minnesota to be near family and spent her last 21 years near family in Wisconsin. The family wants to thank the staff at Sage Meadows (Middleton, WI) and Agrace in Madison, WI for their care. Funeral service 10:00AM SUNDAY, January 11th at TEMPLE OF AARON CEMETERY, 591 Larpenteur Ave W., Roseville, MN. SHIVA 7:00PM Sunday at the home of Phyllis Karasov and Alan Olstein, 1954 Glenhill Road, Mendota Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to a cause that is important to you.
