David Unger Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 27, 2026.
David Phillip Unger, age 80, of Shelby Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 22, 1945, in Pontiac, Michigan, David spent his early years in Birmingham before his family settled in Royal Oak. For the past 30 years, Shelby Township was his home-a place where he built a life grounded in love, laughter, faith, and quiet strength.

A devoted member of St. Mary of the Hills for nearly three decades, David's faith was a steady and guiding presence throughout his life. He found deep joy in the simple pleasures he loved most: fishing, deer hunting, golfing in retirement, and spending treasured time at the family cottage in Houghton Lake. A lifelong learner with a particular love for history, David was an avid reader who enjoyed both discovering the past and exploring new places through travel.

David had a remarkable ability to fix things-both with his hands and with his heart. He was someone others naturally turned to, drawn by his calm presence, kindness, and dependability. Known for his gentle humor and well-loved silly dad jokes, he had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and at ease. His courage, steadiness, and supportive nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

David graduated from Shrine Catholic High School and earned a business degree from Wayne State University. Following graduate school, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving his country with dedication and humility. He went on to build a respected career in the automotive industry as a technical writer and training manager before retiring from General Motors.

Above all else, David's greatest joy and pride was his family. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Barbara Unger; his daughters, Wendy (Steve) Baker and Tracy Unger; and his cherished granddaughter, Zoe Gahm. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ethlyn Unger, and several nieces and nephews who will remember him with deep affection.

David was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Janice Unger; his parents, Russell and Theresa Unger; and his brothers, Thomas (Cora Jean) Unger and John Unger.

One of David's most meaningful final memories was a family trip to Scotland to scatter Janice's ashes-a profound and loving journey that reflected the depth of his devotion to family and the enduring bond he held with those he loved.

David's life was defined by love, faith, generosity, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A mass will be held for David at 11:00 AM, in-state at 10:00 AM, on Friday, January 30, 2026 at St. Mary of the Hills Roman Catholic Church, 2675 John R. Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48307; (248) 853-5390.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations in David's memory may do so through the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
