Doris J. Walz, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Thuesen Cottage, Western Home Communities, in Cedar Falls.
Born August 13, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Albert and Dora (Poggemiller) McColloch Sr.
Doris attended and graduated from Burlington High School. She later married Wayne Hellenthal on May 17, 1947. Doris helped Wayne work and manage their farm for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, Wayne passed away June 5, 1968.
Doris later married Paul Walz on September 2, 1977, and enjoyed 46 years with Paul before his death on September 22, 2023.
Doris worked for the Winegard Company for ten years and later for the Iowa Department of Human Services for thirteen years before retiring in 1990.
Doris was a very active and intelligent woman. In her youth, and later into her adult life, she enjoyed roller and ice skating. She had a passion for line dancing and continued dancing into her 90s.
Doris had a very artistic mind and a love for sewing and crafting. Many beautiful afghans and quilts adorned her home, all made by her hand; she also made outfits for her family and Halloween costumes for the kids.
Doris had an eye for collectibles and enjoyed finding the perfect item at flea markets and garage sales. The hunt was always worthwhile when she discovered the perfect treasure at a great price.
She looked forward to traveling throughout the United States with Paul, attending conventions and wintering in Arizona. Despite her travels, she was a Burlingtonite to her core and took great pride in her town. She retained many historical facts about Burlington and enjoyed sharing them with anyone who would listen. She loved Crapo Park and held many fond memories of ice skating there.
Above all, Doris loved her family. She enjoyed learning about where her family came from and researching her genealogy. She loved her children and grandchildren tremendously and was proud of their successes in life. Doris will be deeply missed, but her memory and legacy will continue through all who love her.
Survivors include her son, Nicholas (Glenda) Hellenthal of Cedar Falls; stepchildren, Brian Walz of Elburn, Illinois, David Walz of Johnsburg, Illinois, Melissa Boldebuch of Van Buren, Arkansas, Theresa Castro of Brookfield, Illinois, and Mary Lluhi of Mount Dora, Florida; ten grandchildren, Brent, Ryan Matthew, Jonathan, Ryan Paul, Giancarlo, Erin, Victoria, Sara, Emilie, and Adrianna; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan, Naomi, Delphina, Keira, Jaeden, Arabella, and Orion; and several nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne, and her second husband, Paul; three brothers, Orville, Albert, and Dale McColloch; two sisters, Elsie Miller and Vivian Johnson; and one step-grandson, Scott David Walz.
