Doris Wicker Obituary

Doris Irene Wicker (formerly Greer), 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 27, 2026, at Wheatfields Senior Living in Clovis, New Mexico.
Doris was born on February 12, 1938, in El Centro, California, to Mike and Alice Greer. In 1940, the family moved to Portales, New Mexico, where Doris was raised and developed the strong work ethic and resilient spirit that would define her life.
A love of dancing led Doris to the love of her life, Jerry Wicker. They met on the dance floor, quickly fell in love, and were married on February 21, 1963. Together, they became masters of the Texas Swing, spending many joyful evenings dancing to the music of Bob Wills and other beloved bands. Their partnership was one of laking, laughter, and love.
Doris balanced life as a devoted wife, mother of three, and career woman with admirable tact and determination. She began her 30-year career at Mountain Bell in 1958 as a telephone operator and retired from AT&T as an operations manager. This upward movement was a testament to her role and impact as a women's libber. Known as a sharp dresser and a true "getter-doner," Doris carried herself with confidence, capability, and grace.
A farmer's daughter at heart, Doris was never afraid to get her hands dirty. She ran a tight ship, organizing life's chaos with lists and label makers, and somehow made it all look effortless. She made what many considered the best biscuits and gravy in the Southwest, grew a grand garden, and found joy in feeding anyone who walked through her door. Her home was always open, her table always full.
After retirement, Doris and Jerry spent summers at their beloved lake house in Logan, New Mexico, at Ute Lake. What began as a run-down property became her happy place, transformed through her vision and hard work. She delighted in teaching her children's friends to water ski-no matter how many hours it meant she would be in the water with them-and created memories that will ripple on for generations.
Doris loved quilting, gardening, and being prepared for just about anything. She could recite the lyrics of any Willie Nelson song under the sun. She was often the one family and friends would call for music trivia answers or life advice. Whether dressed in pantsuits, windbreakers, or work clothes, it was her warm smile and kind eyes that people will remember most. She could organize a zoo, light up a room, feed an army, love a stranger, and accomplish anything she set her mind to.
A devoted Christian, Doris' faith sustained her, especially in the final years of her life. She was a cherished Grammie, a best friend, a loving mother, and a bright light in the lives of many. Though she will be deeply missed, she would surely remind us all to march on-there is still more to be done.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Kelly Vidamour, and husband, Jim of Taos; her oldest son, Mark Wicker of Albuquerque; and her youngest son, Grayson Wicker of Clovis. She is also survived by three grandsons: Sepp Haukebo and wife Katie of Galveston, Texas; Niko Haukebo and wife Maddy of Hood River, Oregon; and Gage Wicker of Melrose, New Mexico; two granddaughters, Gentry Haukebo of Ghent, Belgium, and Skyla Wicker of Melrose, New Mexico; two great-granddaughters, Finley and Lulah; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mary L. (Pete) Brown and Marlene Sappington; and her beloved husband, Jerry Wicker.
A life well lived, a dance well danced, and a legacy of love that will carry on.
Private family services will be held at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 18. The time & location will be announced at a later date. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Muffley Funeral Home. Please share memories, comments & photos at MuffleyFuneralHome.com

Aunt Doris will be missed! I loved her spirit and her warm conversations. I haven't seen her much in recent years, but was glad I had gone for a visit last month. She still had the same spunky personality I'll always remember.

My Aunt Doris became almost as close to me as a mother over the years, as far as being able to talk to her about anything that was happening in my world. We got to spend more time together over the past several years after I retired and I loved doing gardening, crafts, and cooking with her and for her. She was beloved and I will miss her a lot!

A Aunt that was full of life and loved her family. She will be sorely missed! She was good to neices and nephews and treated us like her own. She help raise my brother Benny and she loved him to death but could try to boss him and two stubborn heads would meet! Great memories.
