Doris Rita Wilson

Doris Rita Wilson was born on March 21, 1940, to the late Samuel and Juanita Simmons.

She was a lifelong resident of Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana, affectionately known as

Pigeon Town, a place she proudly called home throughout her life.

Doris was a devoted homemaker who will be fondly remembered for her bold and vibrant

personality, her love of gardening, and the joy she found in hosting garage sales. Above all,

she was deeply devoted to her family and friends, whom she loved fiercely and

wholeheartedly.

On December 15, 2025, at the age of 85, Doris peacefully went home to be with our Lord

and Savior. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pleasant Wilson, and her

cherished daughter, Ethel Marie Simmons Haley (Reginald Haley). She was also preceded

in death by several siblings: Samuel Simmons Jr., Rosalie Derbigny, Juanita Lee, Pearl

Simmons, and Maudin Simon.

She leaves to cherish her memory her four beloved children: Melvin Simmons (Gwendolyn

McDaniel Simmons), Lynell Smith, Lucille Batiste (Ervin Batiste Jr.), and Wayne P. Wilson.

Doris was the proud grandmother of 16 grandchildren, over 23 great grandchildren and over

13 great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving siblings: Joyce Milton, Tut M. Simmons, Edward J. Simmons

Sr., and Valerie Hawkins, all of New Orleans, Louisiana, along with a host of loving nieces,

nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.

Doris "Mama" Wilson will be deeply missed, yet her beautiful life, strength, and love will

forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her legacy of family, resilience, and

unconditional love will continue to guide generations to come.

The family kindly requests your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. A private
