Dorothea Cook Stroop, 75, of New Market, passed away January 28, 2026 at her home.

She was born December 25, 1950 in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of the late Ernest Franklin and Yonnie Virginia Mathias Cook, Sr.

Dorothea was a childcare provider. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren in Timberville. She also served as a Girl Scout troop service leader.

On July 17, 1976 she married James E. Stroop, Jr., who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter; Whitney Smith and husband Jarret, of Bridgewater, a granddaughter; Franklynn Smith, of Bridgewater, a grandson; Warner Smith, of Bridgewater, a brother; Alfred L. Cook and wife Angie, of Mt. Crawford, a brother-in-law; David Riley and companion Donna Wendland, of Gettysburg, PA, numerous nieces and nephews and all the children she provided childcare for, whom she cherished and loved as family.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law; Ernest F. Cook, Jr. and wife Carolyn and a sister; Cynthia Riley.

Pastor Victor Norris will conduct a memorial service on Saturday, February 7, at 2:00 PM at Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. For those attending the service, Dorothea requests you wear her favorite color red.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
