Dorothy Merle Akers

 August 10, 1927 – August 30, 2025

Dorothy Merle Akers was born on August 10, 1927, in Bridgeport, Indiana, to John Astor Warren and Agnes Holiday Warren. She was preceded in death by her parents and five beloved siblings.

Dorothy confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Henry Thurston Toliver. She was a proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School and went on to attend Indiana University.

On March 12,1949, Dorothy was united in marriage to Ulysses George Akers. Their union was blessed with five children, who became the joy of her life.

Dorothy embraced life with warmth, generosity, and a deep love for people. She found great joy in caring for her family and lending a helping hand to anyone in need. A lifelong learner, Dorothy was an avid reader who particularly enjoyed historical novels and poetry. One of Dorothy’s favorite poems was “Little Orphant Annie” by the beloved Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley

She was a devoted member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served for over 30 years until her health declined in 2015. During her time there, she was an active member of the choir and served with grace on the Mother's Board.

Dorothy peacefully departed this earthly life on August 30, 2025, and entered into eternal rest with the Lord. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and cherished friend, known for her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

She leaves to celebrate her memory: her children, Joyce Akers, Michael Akers (Julie), Deborah Hawkins, and Warren Akers; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothy also leaves behind a host of extended family and friends, including one especially devoted and loyal friend, Geraldine Hawkins.

Her light, love, and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
