Dorothy Jean Atchison Smith passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025. She was born in Salitpa, Alabama on June 21, 1938 to James and Myrtle Atchison.
Dorothy (known to many as Dot or Dottie) grew up in Pensacola, Florida and graduated from Pensacola High School. She went on to study nursing at Tulane University. She met the love of her life, Dean Smith in 1958. They married and had two sons, James David and Kevin Dean. After a few years of working in the medical field as a nurse, she quit to become a full time mom to her two sons. She later served as receptionist at Northway Church for over 20 years. Known for her compassion for others, she dedicated her life to her family and serving others, always there with a listening ear and a warm embrace. She took special joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her home was always filled with love and laughter.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Myrtle; husband, Dean; and son, David. She is survived by her son, Kevin (Vicki); daughter-in-love, Jana (Jason); granddaughter, Allison Fields (T.J.); grandson, Andrew Smith; and great grandchildren, Thomas, Kate and Karoline Fields.
A visitation will be held at North Dallas Funeral home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, TX 75234 on Monday from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held at Northway Church, 3877 Walnut Hill Lane, Dallas, TX 75229 on Tuesday, November 18 at 1 pm with a burial service on Wednesday, November 19 at 11:30 am at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Northway Church or to the charity of your choice.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
