Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barber Memorial Home, Inc. - Johnson City on Sep. 3, 2025.
Dorothy Jane (Burchell) Bors,
Johnson City, NY age 94, passed
peacefully into the arms of Jesus, on August 28, 2025 at the Elizabeth
Church Manor. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary (Bisecker)
Burchell, her father, Lysle Burchell, her sisters, Margaret Croucher,
Edna Stack, and Sandra Drake, her nephews, John Burchell, Michael
Stack, and David Croucher.
She is survived by her children, Karen Amey, Rozanne Abbott
(Jonathan), Lynn Roberts, Theresa Hickin (Charles), Janet Knadle
(Kevin), Randall Bors (Colleen), and Jonathan Bors (Kevin), 21
grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren,
her sister, Shirley Clark, her brother, Norman John Burchell, 1
nephew, and 8 nieces.
She was a 1949 graduate of Johnson City High School and lived in the
area all her life, bound by love and loyalty to her very large family
and close relatives.
She retired from Universal Instruments, (later, known as Dover
Electronics, Dovatron and now Flextronics) in 1993 and enjoyed her
retirement years going out to lunch and dinner with family, driving
her car to garage sales, appointments, and shopping excursions. Later,
she enjoyed doing her puzzles in the newspaper, and on her tablet.
Some of her favorites were the Jumble, Sudoku, and Wordle. She also
liked to watch travel shows on YouTube, the Barton twins and the lady
who prepared food, from Azerbaijan.
She was a great listener, confidant, and counselor. She taught by
example and was patient and kind, loving all children and most
animals, especially her beloved conure, Kiwi who passed away in her
arms just one short year ago.
She often told stories from her childhood and the experiences she had
growing up visiting her cousin Virginia Barton on the farm in New
Milford. She loved singing songs and taught her children to sing and
harmonize with her. She had a beautiful voice. She was also known to
do silly things like belting out renditions of musicals (or any song
that popped into her head) once getting caught by the postman, as she
twirled around on the front porch, embarrassed at being discovered,
and the infamous naked "Pink Panther" strut in front of the landlord
who surprised her with a visit to show the apartment to two mortified
onlookers.
But it was her children that could make her laugh so hard she had to
beg them to stop. Her laugh was infectious and unique, truly the best
medicine for her longevity and vitality. We will dearly miss her
presence, but cherish the wonderful memories that we have of her and
the positive impact she leaves behind, in everyone who met and knew
her.
A private, intimate graveside gathering for close and extended family is
scheduled for Friday, September 12th at 10:00 am at Calvary Cemetery in
Johnson City. A celebration of Life meal will also take place for these
attendees, Saturday, September 13th at 1pm at the church Hall at Calvary
Community Church, 780 Harry L. Drive,
Johnson City, NY 13905.
