Dorothy Figg Obituary

Dorothy Richardson Figg

October 11, 1931 - January 6, 2026

Dorothy Richardson Figg (Dottie) was born in Lynchburg, Va. She was predeceased by her parents, Wyatt Lee Richardson and Dorothy Richardson Johns and her beloved husband of 61 years, Coleman Figg. She is survived by son, Coleman Drummond Figg, Jr. (Drum) and his wife Landon; her grandson, Charles Drummond Figg; son, Wyatt Richardson Figg; brother, Wyatt L. Richardson, Jr. (Pam); and her schnauzer, Jordan.

She grew up in Richmond and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, returning to Lynchburg to attend Randolph Macon Woman's College, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Dottie was past chairman of the Altar Guild of All Saints Episcopal Church, past president of the Collegiate Schools Patrons Association, past Trustee of the Collegiate Schools and Trinity Episcopal School, past Junior director of Lee District, Va. Federation of Women's Clubs and past president of the Sleepy Hollow Woman's Club and the Ginter Park Junior Woman's Club.

A Realtor from 1974 to 2018, she opened the Long & Foster Stoney Point office (originally established by Bowers, Nelms, and Fonville in 1955) and remained its Managing Broker until her retirement in 2012. She was appointed for nine years to the Virginia Real Estate Board by three Virginia Governors, serving as chairman for two years. She was a past President of the Richmond Association of Realtors and was named Outstanding Realtor of the Year in 2001. She received numerous honors from the local, state and national Realtor Associations during her career, including membership in the Virginia Realtors' Hall of Fame, NAR's Omega Tau Rho and Realtor Emeritus status. In 2018, her office dedicated a conference room to her, an honor she cherished.

Dottie loved the outdoors, the river, Virginia Beach and the mountains and enjoyed backpacking and skiing with her family in their younger years, then jogging, kayaking and tennis, which she continued well into her 80s. Long walks with her dogs were highlights of every day. She and her husband traveled often and loved their journeys, but their favorite excursion was with both sons in 1969, crossing the United States with a pop-up camper and riding mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

A public visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, January 12, at Bliley's Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, VA 23230. A private graveside service will be held the following day, Tuesday, January 13, at Westhampton Memorial Gardens.

The family invites friends to join them after the private burial for a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at Willow Oaks Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church of Richmond, Va, St. Christopher's School of Richmond, Va. or Virginia CASA at virginiacasa.org.

Prayers to the Figg family. Dottie was such a wonderful lady and although I had not seen her for years I won't forget how she reached out when my dad Fred passed in 2015.

During Governor Robb's administration, Dottie served on the Real Estate Commission, and I served as Director of the Commerce Department, which included the Commission. The important thing is not that Dottie served, but it was how she served. She saw the job as not protecting the industry from the public, but as an instrument for enhancing consumer confidence in the industry. She also spearheaded our initiatives for fighting housing discrimination, which was unpopular at the time but the right thing to do. Virginia is, and will always be, a much better place because of Dottie Figg's public service.
