Dorothy Hammond Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 7, 2025.
Dorothy K. "Dot" Hammond, a beloved member of the Simpsonville community, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on July 11, 1932, in Seneca, South Carolina, Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many during her remarkable lifetime.
Dorothy was known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her vocation. She owned and operated Miss Dot's Day Care for many years, where her nurturing spirit and compassionate nature provided a safe and loving environment for countless children. Her commitment to her work was matched only by her involvement in her church, as a member of First Baptist Church in Simpsonville and the Builders Sunday School Class. Dorothy's faith guided her every step and was a source of strength in her life.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dorothy had a passion for flower gardening, bringing beauty to her surroundings, and took great pride in maintaining a spotless home. Those who knew her will remember her infectious smile, her gentle laughter, and her ability to bring warmth and light to even the darkest days.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Maebelle Kirby; her first husband, Joseph L. Tompkins, and her second husband, Henry "Bud" Hammond.
Dorothy is survived by her loving daughter, Betty Jo "BJ" Burns; her son, Daniel Tompkins; her cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin and Joey Tompkins; and her dear sister, Joan Bridges. Her loving spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
A cryptside service will be held in her honor on November 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Greenville County as well as the Alzheimer's Association.
Rest in peace, Dorothy. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives you touched.
