Dorothy Huppe Obituary

Dorothy "Ducky" Jean Sweeney Huppe passed away peacefully at home in Falls Church, Virginia, on Tuesday, October 14th, 2025. She was 92.

Dorothy was born and raised on a farm in Marshall, Missouri on January 13th, 1933, to parents Harry and Clara Sweeney. She was the third in a lively family of fifteen siblings. She was ambitious, and had always dreamed of attending college. She put herself through college and graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor a degree in Interior Design – one of her proudest accomplishments.

After graduating, she began her career as a secretary to pay the bills. She then worked in advertising at Oscar Meyer, before going on to build a successful, decades-long interior design business in Delaware: Designs by Dorothy.

Dorothy was married for 37 years to Frank Huppe, with whom she raised three children John, Susan and Michael, in Wilmington, Delaware. A devoted mother and grandmother, she later moved to Northern Virginia to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was also deeply committed to giving back to those around her. She spent many years volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels, as well as leading several fundraising efforts for her children's schools. Her grace and generosity left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know her.

Dorothy is survived by many family members whom she loved dearly – her three children, John Huppe, Susan Huppe, and Michael Huppe, and her two beloved grandchildren, Ellie Huppe and Ryan Huppe. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Maria Huppe, as well as nine siblings: Raymond Sweeney, Pat Calvert, Margie Stober, Rita Bales, Bill Sweeney, Bob Sweeney, John Sweeney, Connie Wiard, and Annette Smith – and hundreds of other members of the Sweeney family.

She was preceded in death by her two parents and five siblings: Rose Marie Lavelock, Betty Armentrout, Richard Sweeney, Gene Sweeney, and Dan Sweeney.

Dorothy was an elegant, polite, and classy woman with a smile that lit up the room around her. In addition to her passion for interior design, she enjoyed many hobbies such as sewing, bridge, piano, and cooking. In her later years, she discovered a love for painting and produced a beautiful portfolio of original artwork. Above all, she cherished time spent with her friends and family. She will be missed greatly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carrollton, Missouri, (her hometown) on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A scheduled visitation will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carrollton, Missouri, on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. A Parish Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m., just prior to service. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. A reception in her honor will be held at La Bella Casa, Carrollton, Missouri, immediately following burial. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Alzheimer's Association at https://events.alz.org/s/2266/2724.
