Mrs. Dorothy 'Laverne' Worley Payton, 69, of Elberton, wife of the late Bobby Ray Payton, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
Laverne was born in Elberton on January 10, 1956, daughter of the late William Lafayette Worley and Rachel Viola Johnson Worley.
Laverne was a devoted mother and grandma, blessed with seven granddaughters and two grandsons. Her love for her family was boundless, and she found immense joy in spending time with her grandchildren. Her kitchen chairs will forever hold the memories of flour-filled cracks from countless biscuit-making sessions with her grandkids.
As a member of Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church, for over 20 years, Laverne dedicated herself to teaching Sunday School and Children's Church, sharing her faith and love with the children of her community. Even as she battled early onset Alzheimer's, she held tightly to her faith, never forgetting the name of Jesus.
Laverne had a deep love for the water, often spending hours in the pool or at the lake. Her favorite pastime was playing with her grandchildren, and her laughter was a constant presence, especially when enjoying the jokes of Papa Bobby.
A hard worker who always put her girls first, Laverne's legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to inspire those who knew her. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Surviving are her daughters: Rhonda Suttles (Shane) Cox, Barbara Ann (Eric Wright) Suttles, Charmin Leigh (Kyle) Sexton, and Jessica (Jimmy) Simons; sisters: Annette (the late William) Boswell and Norma Faye (Larry) Garrett; grandchildren: Chloe, Sydnee, Alli, Makaila, Payton, McKenzi, Presleigh, Jake, and Luke; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 21, from 11:15a.m. until 12:15p.m. at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12:30p.m. She will be laid to rest with her parents and husband at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Flowers are accepted, and contributions may be made in her memory to the Georgia Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, 41 Perimeter Center E #550, Atlanta, GA 30346..
