Dorothy Marie Messer Butler Bishop passed away on October 29, 2024, at Adamsville Health Care Center at the age of 93 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
Dorothy was born on June 14, 1931, in Chester County, TN, the daughter of the late Nell Maness Brigance and the late Willard Messer.
She was a graduate of Hume High School in Memphis, TN.
She married William Perry Butler on December 29, 1950, and he passed away on February 6, 1975.
She later married George Henry Bishop, Sr. in November of 1975 and they made their home in Henderson. Mr. Bishop preceded her in death on January 5, 2020.
Mrs. Bishop was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was also active in volunteer work such as cooking for community civic events, Veterans’ programs, Meals on Wheels, and as a cancer survivor she was a “Relay for Life” participant. She was also active in the Eastern Star and was a Worthy Matron.
She is survived by a son, George Michael Butler (Sue) of Deltona, FL; stepsons George Henry Bishop, Jr. of Morris Chapel, TN and Bobby Bishop (Ganetta) of Adamsville, TN; a stepdaughter Linda Diane Pendley of Adamsville; 10 grandchildren Raymond Butler, Julie Butler, Gennifer Boyer (Brandon), Heather Thayer (Phillip), Gregory Carron (Amirah), Tyler Carron, Chris Bishop (Marion), Sabrina Bishop Pipes (Jimmy), Kristy Stamper (Mark), Laura Baker (Aaron), Mandy Russell (Josh), Nicole Sisk (Ryan); 21 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by her children Walter Lee Butler, Willard Perry Butler, Victor Craig Butler, Marjorie Lynn Butler.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson’s Crook Avenue Chapel with Ronnie Geary officiating. There will also be an Eastern Star service with burial to follow at Friendship Cemetery in Beech Bluff.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue Chapel on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and then from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM service time on Sunday.
