Dorothy Mae Milner Dec. 1, 1933 – Aug. 29, 2025
Dorothy Mae Milner, 91, was born in Pierpont, Ashtabula, Ohio to Leo Henry Brown and Beatrice Elizabeth Moore. She was the last surviving of their 5 children. She passed away peacefully with loved ones at her bedside in Longmont, Colorado.
She was a hardworking, funny, compassionate and optimistic person. She embodied the saying, "If life hands you lemons, make lemonade." Her father, Leo, was a lumberman who moved his family where the timber grew. Dorothy attended 26 schools before graduating high school. The family was never in a place for more than 6 months before moving again, sometimes living in tents or shanties with no plumbing or electricity. As the oldest girl, Dorothy, shouldered many of the home chores.
At an early age Dorothy moved out to live with other families in the area. In exchange for a place to live, she would help with the farm chores. She was very appreciative of the kindness of these families and became very industrious and independent.
Dorothy met James Lincoln Milner in 1951, and they dated until he shipped out to Japan during the Korean war. He was smitten with Dorothy and sent her an engagement ring through the mail. After his discharge they were married on May 15, 1954, in Jefferson, Ashtabula, Ohio. They made a home together and had 2 girls, Gail (Kris) MacCabe, and Donna Rust who survive. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Dorothy and James raised their family in Broomfield, Colorado. Missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knocked on their door in 1962, and they soon became lifelong members. This made all the difference in the lives of their family, and they worked hard to raise their girls in peace and the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Dorothy became a prolific, knitter and seamstress. Many quilts, baby blankets, slippers, hats, dolls, pajamas, dresses, and other creations were gifted to family and friends throughout her life. She was also a scrumptious cook and famous for her cinnamon rolls. James took great pride in her ability to make a nice home.
Her family was her joy, and her home was always open to them. In 2015 she lost her dear companion, James. She continued to make handcrafts for the family and enjoyed exchanging humor and stories with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These loved ones were her life's work and legacy, and we are forever grateful for the fun, encouragement and love this dear lady shared with all of us.
Burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, with her beloved eternal companion, James Milner.
