WATERVLIET - Dorothy D. Mitchell, age 88, of Watervliet, N.Y., passed away on December 15, 2025 at Samaritan Hospital, in Troy, following a brief illness.
Born August 19, 1937 in Troy, Dorothy was the beloved daughter of the late Edward and Anita (Martin) Dillon. She was the devoted wife of the late Nicholas M. Mitchell Sr., with whom she shared 49 cherished years, until his passing on June 24, 2009.
Dorothy was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Saint Peter's School and Catholic Central High School, class of 1955. After high school, she worked as a loan officer at Marine Midland Bank, and later became a dedicated homemaker, committed to raising her family.
Dorothy enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, sewing, bowling, and the occasional bus trip to Atlantic City with her beloved husband. She was also a savvy QVC customer who delighted in discovering new finds. Most of all, she cherished her family. She treasured the friendship of her longtime group known as the Golden Girls, with whom she met monthly at the 76 Diner, in Latham.
A devout Catholic, Dorothy was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish (formerly St. Brigid's) in Watervliet.
In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her infant son, J. Edward Mitchell; and her siblings, Edward Dillon (late Patricia), Anita O'Connell (late Daniel), Rita Lashway (late Leonard), and Marilyn Arroyo.
Dorothy is survived by her loving children, Dottie Mitchell, Nick Mitchell (Joy), and Kevin Mitchell; her grandchildren Patrick (Debra) and Zachary (Charlotte); and her three great-grandchildren Elliott, Kinsley and Jackson. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Victor Arroyo; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, N.Y.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 20, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 2416 7th Ave, Watervliet, N.Y. Interment will follow in the family plot at Saint Peter's Cemetery, Troy, N.Y.
The Mitchell family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Samaritan Hospital for their kindness, compassion, and professionalism during Dorothy's care.
