Dorothy Palmateer, the matriarch of her family, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the age of 88.
Dorothy will be laid to rest at a private family burial at the Ashton Cemetery.
Dorothy Jean Tribby was born on August 21, 1937, in Rhodes, Iowa, to Junnie and Bernice (Skinner) Tribby. She grew up and received her education in the Ellsworth, Iowa area, where she also met the love of her life, Charles Palmateer. Dorothy and Charles were married on December 15, 1956, in Jackson, Minnesota, and were blessed with four children: Mark, Robin, Gail, and Roxane. The family made their home in Huxley. When the kids were grown, they moved to Ames. Dorothy built a career at Hach Chemical, where she started in the soldering department and later worked in shipping and receiving until her retirement.
Dorothy was not only a devoted mother to her own children but was lovingly known as "mom" to many others as well. She had a generous heart, always ready to lend a hand and brighten someone's day. Dorothy enjoyed baking her famous sugar and chocolate cookies to share with others and took charge of preparing the meals for every holiday and family gathering. At the Ames Farmer's Market, she delighted the community with her delicious Kringla pastries. Above all, Dorothy cherished the time spent and memories made with Charles, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren-moments her family will hold close for years to come.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her husband of 68 years, Charles Palmateer; children, Mark (Kathi Stobl) Palmateer, Robin Tice, Gail Palmateer, and Roxane (Douglas) Bush; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; bonus daughter, Andy Williams; sister, Betty Vieman; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Tribby. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junnie and Bernice Tribby; parents-in-law, Loyal and Pearl Palmateer; siblings, Earl Tribby, Bonnie (Wallace) Haines, Carolyn (Gus) Workman, and Judy (Dave) Cooper; and brother-in-law, Lowell Vieman.
Condolences and memories of Dorothy may be shared with her family in the tributes section of her memorial page.
