Dorothy Ann Augenstein Russell, 92, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, in Tallahassee, Florida, leaving behind a legacy marked by love, laughter, and unwavering warmth.

Born on February 18, 1933, in a log cabin nestled in the rolling hills of Lowell, Ohio, Dorothy was the daughter of Phyllis Murray Augenstein and Roy Augenstein. Surrounded by nature and simplicity from the beginning, she carried the serenity of her rural upbringing in her heart throughout her life, no matter where her journey led.

Dorothy’s life was a vibrant blend of interests and talents. A skilled quilter and seamstress, she also enjoyed country western line dancing and bowling. She had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and took great pride in her garden, which she lovingly maintained. Her yard became a peaceful refuge, not only for herself but also for the squirrels she fed daily, an act that reflected her quiet kindness.

Known for her sense of humor, Dorothy was a natural prankster whose lighthearted spirit brought joy to those around her. Friends and colleagues fondly recall her good-natured mischief, which left lasting smiles and stories still shared today. Alongside her wit, she demonstrated a deep sense of compassion, volunteering her time as a candy striper at the hospital and assisting at the local food bank.

Dorothy was also deeply devoted to her church, and her faith served as a constant source of strength throughout her life.

In 1967, Dorothy moved with her family to Orlando, Florida, where she began a dedicated and impactful career in public service with the Orange County government. She initially worked in the Pollution Control Department before serving as Administrative Aide to the Mayor of Orange County. Her professionalism, integrity, and commitment to service earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues across the county.

She shared a long and loving marriage of 35 years with her late husband, David Russell and was preceded in death by her mother, Phyllis Augenstein, Father, Roy Augenstein, brother, Jerry Augenstein and daughter, Jill Russell Skiver. She is survived by her daughters, Chris Russell and Toni Russell; granddaughter, Melanie Skiver; and brother, Larry Augenstein.

Dorothy had a rare and radiant joy for life, an energy she shared freely and generously. Whether engaged in her hobbies, traveling, or simply enjoying the quiet moments on her porch, she made the world brighter for those fortunate enough to know her.

A woman of resilience, humor, and heart, Dorothy leaves behind a legacy not only of cherished memories but also of a life lived with grace, compassion, and joy.

A memorial service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held in Lowell, Ohio, on December 12, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. at the LOWELL CHAPEL OF CAWLEY & PEOPLES FUNERAL HOME, with Rob Tuttle officiating. Family will greet friends at the funeral home during a reception following the services. Burial with a brief graveside service will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at 2 p.m. that afternoon.
