Dorothy "Dot" Virginia Shealy, age 102, of Elizabeth City, NC passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Waterbrooke Assisted Living. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Emma Giles and grew up in Norfolk, VA, living there for much of her life and considered herself a "city girl." She was predeceased by her loving husband of 24 years, John D. Shealy. After retirement, they loved traveling and cruising together. Her late husband, and devoted father of her three sons, Vernon William (Bill) Stewart, passed suddenly in 1970 after 30 years of marriage.
Dot loved flowers, always planting some of her favorites, like camellias and begonias, wherever she called home. She was an excellent seamstress and did alterations when her boys were young. Dot enjoyed crafting with her best friend, Alice Carey, and loved the beach. It was an integral part of her family and her life over the years. She retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk, VA, where she met her husband, John. Dot was known at Waterbrooke for her lipstick, jewelry, fashion statements, and love of chocolate. The family appreciates Amanda Dodson's faithful service as her hairdresser to keep her stylish for 2.5 years.
She is survived by three sons, Vernon William Stewart, Jr. and Judy Dye of Grifton, NC, Gregory Alan Stewart and wife, Donna, of South Mills, NC, David Roy Stewart and wife, Kim, of Minnesott Beach, NC; and John's two daughters, Cheryl Shealy Davis of Norfolk, VA and Cindy Shealy Edwards and husband, Steve, of Smithfield, VA. She was blessed with grandchildren: Cory Bourgeois, Rachel Cantu' (Ryan), Lydia Ewonus (Jake), Crystal Carawan, Amanda Mitchell, Stewart Davis (Christina), Jeremy Davis (Tiana), Ashley Edwards, Brooke Gross (Wesley), Kimberly Dail (Steve), Laura Church, Jeff Church, and many great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Thelma Janice Giles, and John's children, John Daryl Shealy and Patricia Shealy Church.
The family appreciates the support given to them by the staff at Waterbrooke Assisted Living and MSA/Albemarle Home Health and Hospice. Sharon and Jessica were an integral part of her daily care for over two years and knew how to navigate challenges. We are appreciative of all of the kindness shown by staff and residents, especially her dear friend, Mrs. Mildred. We also appreciate the clergy visits from Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Rosewood Kellum Memorial Park, 601 North Witchduck Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462, officiated by Mrs. Louise Spry.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Food Bank of the Albemarle ([email protected]/), 109 Tidewater Way, P. O. Box 1704, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
