Dorothy Virginia Smith,92, of Gonzales passed away Thursday, August 7, 2025. She was born in Amsterdam, New York and lived there until the age of 3 when she and her mom and sister moved to Texas. She was baptized as an infant and then later in life rededicated her life.
She graduated in 1951 from Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texas where she was the Senior Class Vice President. She was also a member of the girl's Sam Houston High School Cherokees State Champion basketball team in 1949. She married Perry Smith on April 1, 1953 in Valdosta, Georgia. They later divorced but remained friends and raised their two daughters.
She loved the outdoors and as a child would go squirrel hunting and fishing with her dad. After her daughters were married, she moved back to San Antonio and worked many years at Alamo Plants and Petals. She eventually moved back to Gonzales and started a 30 year career at the Gonzales County Senior Citizens as a van driver and then later worked with Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by her daughters Donna Gray (Jay) and Patty Stewart (Willard); grandsons Brock Stewart (Nancy), Brady Stewart (Jennifer) and Josh Gray (Jolie); great-grandchildren Regan Gray Wilkerson, Ashlynn Sanders (Braxton), Abby Stewart, Hays Gray, Emma Stewart and Lane Stewart. Great, great grandchildren Grayson Wilkerson and Stonie Sanders.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eva and R.D. Wright and Joseph Revelia, sister Jeannine Jolley and grandson Ross Gray.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2025 at the First Methodist Church with Dr. Matt Pennington officiating. Memorials may be made to Norma's House or the charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Walker, the staff of Romberg House, Avir of Gonzales and Elara Hospice for their great care.
