Dorothy Jean Jackson was born to Samuel L. Jackson and Bessie Lee Horne Jackson on December 21, 1930, in Vernon, Florida. "Dorothy Jean" was the affectionate name she was known by as she grew up and received her education in Washington County Public School System. Dorothy graduated from T. J. Roulhac High School in Chipley, FL where she was crowned "Miss Roulhac High."
Two of her brothers (Alex and Rudolph) moved to Jacksonville Beach and were employed in the hospitality industry. Later, Dorothy joined them. She was introduced to Mose Thomas, Jr. and were joined in Holy Matrimony on March 17, 1950. They were blessed with seven children, Mose III, Vonna, Samuel, Lillie, Phillip, Andrew, and John.
Dorothy was a loving wife and mother. She counseled, encouraged and prayed for many. She blessed many with invites to family celebrations in her home, with food, fun and great fellowship. She would make everyone she met feel special and valued. Her demeanor and concern for young people made her respected in the community, and she stressed the importance of being involved in community activities. Her family ties provided her opportunities for involvement with numerous people and events in the Beaches area. She was very active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Jacksonville Beach Elementary School #144.
Dorothy Jean Jackson received Christ in her life at an early age and joined Sylvania African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in Vernon, Florida. After moving to Jacksonville Beach, she joined St. Andrew A.M.E. Church, where she served diligently over 70 years. Dorothy Jean was a member of the Usher Board and served as its President. She also served as a Steward, a Trustee, member and President of The Stewardess Board, and afterwards being named Stewardess Emerita. In 2023, at The East Conference Day of Sharing, Bishop Frank Madison Reid, III consecrated her as a Deaconess.
Dorothy Jean Jackson Thomas was the legendary member of her family, the last sibling to transition from her earthly home to her heavenly abode. There she will join her parents, her siblings, Louis Jackson, Herbert Jackson, Frank Jackson, Hardy Jackson, Ophelia Roche, Alex Jackson, Rudolph Jackson, Howard Jackson and Grace Bennett; her beloved husband, Mose Thomas, Jr.; her son, Mose Thomas, III; and cherished family members, three daughters-in-law, Mercedes, Cynthia Ann, and Edwina; and son-in-law, Gary Sullivan, Sr.
She will be remembered with love by her children, Vonna J. Milligan (Ronald Sr.), Samuel L. Thomas, Lillie J. Sullivan, Phillip W. Thomas (Zenobia), Andrew S. Thomas, and John S. Thomas (Carol); her godson, Nathan Ziegler; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
