Dorthy Hendry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burns Funeral Home of Perry on Dec. 14, 2025.
Dorthy Ethel (Dottie) Hendry, age 69, of Perry, Florida, passed away, Saturday, December 13, 2025, after a short illness.

Dottie was born on March 11, 1956, in Valdosta, Georgia, to Norman C. and Janette Howell Hendry. She lived most of her life in Perry, Florida. Dottie was a proud graduate of Taylor County High School, Class of 1974, and then went on to earn her AA degree from North Florida Junior College. Dottie worked as a librarian at the Taylor County Public Library until moving and living in Frostproof, Florida for a short period of time.

When Dottie was 29, while living in Frostproof, she contracted encephalitis, an illness that resulted in the loss of her short-term memory. She returned to Perry to be cared for by her family and became a devoted member of First United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church choir for many years. She was known for telling others with sincerity and a touch of wit "Whatever you do, don't lose your memory". She was also known for her positive outlook on life, her enjoyment of word puzzles, corny jokes, and ending every Happy Birthday song with "and many more."

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Janette Hendry, her brother, Alton N. (Buster) Hendry, sister, JoAnn Hendry Glascoe, and her brother, Edwin, and his wife, June Beach Hendry.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Kay Walker Hendry, her brother-in-law, James Glascoe, brother Aaron Hendry and his wife, Seamelia, brother Jerry Hendry and his wife, Linda, and brother Larry Hendry and his wife, Sandy.

Dottie also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews, Al Hendry, Tasha Hendry Smith, Paige Glascoe Purcell, Allison Glascoe Huber, Amanda Hendry Blume, Marsie Hendry Cribbs, Walt Hendry, Chris Hendry, Todd Hendry, Jared Hendry, Jeremy Hendry, Stephanie Hendry, Amy Hendry, and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to playing the piano and singing with her beautiful alto voice, Dottie loved nature, puppy dogs, and her family. She kept them entertained with her jokes and her upbeat personality. Dottie will be remembered for her love of learning, her quick wit, and the joy she brought to those around her. She was deeply loved, and she will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held at Burns Funeral Home on December 16, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Internment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry, Florida.
