Marilyn, a deeply cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend passed away at her home on November 12, 2025, following a courageous and extended battle with heart failure.
Born in Ogden, Utah, on July 10, 1949, to Edna and Gleelyn Bateman. Marilyn was raised in Clearfield alongside her sister and brothers. She graduated from Clearfield High School in 1967 and subsequently earned an associate's degree in business from Stevens-Henager College. Her professional life began at the IRS, leading to a distinguished 35-year career at Hill Air Force Base, where her exceptional service was frequently recognized and awarded.
Marilyn married Winston James Sales, and they welcomed their daughter, Merrilee. After their marriage ended, she found love again and married Steven M Hendry, gaining a daughter, Shannon. Their blended family was completed with the arrival of their daughter, Heather. Their marriage later ended. Marilyn was the quintessential "girl mom," enthusiastically attending softball and soccer games, dance recitals, and hosting birthday celebrations. She shared her joy in cooking family meals and was well known for her caramels and toffee at Christmas. She instilled a love of travel in her daughters, and they always looked forward to their frequent vacations to Southern California.
Marilyn retired from HAFB in 2007, allowing her to redirect her energy to her most cherished roles: doting on her grandchildren and grand pups and tending to her always evolving flower garden, which was a source of immense joy.
Marilyn was the heart of her family, ensuring every member felt the depth of her love. Those who knew her will always remember her for her unconditional kindness, desire to help others and the meaningful relationships she cultivated throughout her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Merrilee Jones (Dave), Shannon Hamblin (Brandon), and Heather Dugger (Travis), Sister Lynette Elliott (Larry), her brothers, Byron Bateman (Peggy) and Gleelyn Bateman (Marcia), her grandchildren, Bailie and Andrew, Drake and Madison, Rocco, Trevor, Kassidy and Abbey, and her great-grandsons, Aiden, Krue, and Kreed. She was preceded in death by her parents and little brother Jay Lynn and we imagine their reunion to be joyous.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Aspire Hospice, particularly Christina, Aman, and Nikki, for the empathetic care and nurturing support provided to our mom during her time on hospice. We would also like to acknowledge the volunteers at SLC Meals on Wheels for their service and friendship. The family will have an intimate celebration of life at a family home where Marilyn enjoyed countless family gatherings during the holidays and family reunions throughout her lifetime.
