Douglas Alling Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Meyers Funeral Home, Ltd. on Jan. 8, 2026.
Douglas F. Alling, 85, of Glen, NY, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026 with his family by his side. Born in Bronxville, NY on July 11, 1940 he was the son of the late Victor and Doris Banse Alling.
Doug, along with his two friends, John Foti and Richie Castelluccio set off in the late 1950s leaving home with hopes of living in Alaska. They made it just three hours from the life they knew, but they found what they were looking for in the Town of Glen.
He was employed by Anderson Instrument for nearly 30 years until his retirement. Prior to that, he was a farm hand, working with animals, which was always his real passion. He carried the knowledge he gained from longtime local farmers into his own life. Doug lived completely off the grid, trained oxen to log and plow, and built a water wheel grist mill. His homesteader mentality led him into many varied and interesting hobbies. He enjoyed raising animals, hunting and living off the land. He loved dogsledding, camping and bluegrass music.
He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on July 15, 1974 in Lake Placid, NY. He cherished the hope of being resurrected to life on a paradise earth, where he will once again enjoy working with the land. -Isaiah 65:20-22
Survivors include his three children, Jennifer (Christopher) Kelly, Brian (Becky) Alling, and Devin (Emily) Alling, and their mother, Peggy Alling; four grandchildren, Michaela Kelly, Gabriella Kelly, Trevor Alling, and Meghan Alling; one great-grandson, Winston Parker; several step children, and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Dixie Gatto, in 2021.
Burial is private and at the convenience of the family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 525 Fort Hunter Rd, Amsterdam, NY.
