Douglas Brent Baldwin

Douglas Brent Baldwin, 74, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2024, in Ogden Utah. He was born May 2, 1949, the son of Preal and Reta Davis Baldwin. He was the third of five children, LaPreal (Cottle), Cheryl (Scoffield), Brent, Russell, and Matt. LaPreal, Matt, and his parents preceded him in death.

 

Brent grew up in Ogden and attended schools at Birch Creek Elementary, South Jr. High and Bonneville High. He left school to join the Army and soon was sent to Ft. Washington for training in preparation for his service in Vietnam.

 

He fought valiantly during his time in Vietnam and tried to leave it behind, but it followed him home. However, his friendship and love for his fellow soldiers, combined with his patriotism, was important to him.

 

Brent married LouAnn Marshall, and they had three children, Cy, Seth, and Caleb Baldwin. He and LouAnn parted ways eventually. He absolutely adored his sons and spent dedicated time with them. He left behind four grandkids, Tanner, Taylor, Leighla, and Ledger. He adored them and was a proud Grandpa.

 

He was an excellent barber and owner of Shear Brothers Bar and Barbershop on 25th Street. He led the way to the restoration of 25th Street as he overhauled his barbershop and filled it with many relics from the past that he loved to talk about. His brother, Russell, worked side by side with him.

 

Brent orchestrated through the Baldwin Mammoth Jack Stock business a donkey for the very first Book of Mormon movie on the banks of the Great Salt Lake. Brent, with his dad and brother Russell, stood by to care for their little donkey and get a sneak peek of the movie. Their animals were also in a TV episode of “Touched by an Angel.”

 

Another interest of Brent’s was family history. He enjoyed reading about his ancestors. He often shared fun stories of their lives from old books and the genealogy given to him by his mother. He was always collecting old family treasures, pictures, and pieces from early Utah, including a portrait of Brigham Young.

 

Brent was a real cowboy, regularly dressed as such in cowboy garb from past centuries. He learned how to be a cowboy from his extended visits to Cannonville in the summers.   His Dad, Grandpa Angus Baldwin and Grandpa George Baldwin were Brent’s heroes about all things cowboy.  In 2013 Brent was instrumental in getting his Great Grandpa George Henry Baldwin inducted into the Utah Cowboy Hall of Fame along with George Henry’s two sons, Angus and Earl, Brent’s grandpa and uncle. He was respected for his specific knowledge of Mammoth Mules. Ranger, who was sixteen hands tall, was the favorite of the herd. Brent loved his animals, and they loved him. His horse, Sis, will wonder where he has gone. He was a horse whisperer like his dad. Brent, Russell, and their dad worked their mule business together for years. One year during Ogden’s Pioneer Days, he rode his mule, “Old Smokey, from home to work on lower 25th Street.

He took up golf and had two holes in one in his life. Once again, often dressed in golf attire from another century. He was also proficient in the game of billiards.

 

Thank you to all who patronized his barbershop, and to the many who inspired and helped him when he needed it. Cowboy friends, antique friends, golf buddies, veterans, and his brothers of the Sundowner Motorcycle Club.

 

Brent will be sorely missed by all of us. He was the highlight of everyone’s day.

 

Funeral services be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be held on Wednesday, March 6th at 3 p.m. at the Cannonville Utah Cemetery, Cannonville, Utah.
