In loving memory of Douglas Levi Brewer – a devoted barber, a cherished friend, and a beloved family man whose impact will forever be treasured by those fortunate enough to have known him.

Douglas “Doug” Levi Brewer, 96,  passed away peacefully at his home in Mt. Holly. He was born on August 26, 1927, in Gaston County to the late William and Lucy Brewer. Doug's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his career as a barber, which he considered not just a job but a lifelong passion. For an impressive 75 years, he wielded his scissors with skill and precision, leaving behind a trail of well-groomed clientele and treasured friendships.

Doug's illustrious career as a barber was not without its extraordinary highlights. He boasted of cutting hair for notable figures such as former President Harry Truman and several NASCAR drivers during his time at the old Airport Terminal. His commitment to his craft and the genuine connections he forged with his repeat customers spoke volumes about the kind of person he was – compassionate, engaging, and always ready to lend an ear.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Doug's vibrant personality shone brightly through his love for people and life in general. A dedicated family man at heart, he cherished moments spent with loved ones more than anything else. In addition to his thriving career, Doug found solace in various hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. Whether it was basking in the serenity of the beach and mountains, pursuing his passion for hunting and fishing, crafting exquisite woodworking pieces like canes, walking sticks, clocks, and knives, or indulging in a round of golf, Doug lived life to the fullest.

A proud veteran who served in the U.S. Navy, Doug's commitment to his country mirrored the dedication he showed towards everything he held dear in life. He was also an avid collector of knives and took great pleasure in expanding his collection over the years.

Doug was a member of the Upper Room Church in Belmont.  He was also a Mason for 60 years serving at the Mt. Holly Masonic Lodge.

Doug is survived by his son, Steve Brewer; sister, Becky Richards; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Karl Reisinger and wife Laura. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Brewer; son, David Brewer; and siblings Juanita Lowe, Brenda Beatty, Squeaky Brewer, and George Brewer.

Services to honor and celebrate Doug's remarkable life will be held at Benson Funeral & Cremation in Mt. Holly. A visitation will take place on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 6:00 PM officiated by Rev. Joe Lawing and Rev. Mike Brewer.  The family will hold a private burial at the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury.
