Lewiston, ME, he was the third of four boys born to Elwin "Babe" and Helen Carter of Durham, Maine.
He was a graduate of Lisbon High School where he was on the wrestling team and found his passion in woodworking. Doug married Maryrose Manyak on February 17, 1968 and had two children, Lisa and Chad. His three beloved nieces, aka "bonus daughters" Rhonda, Kellie, and Kim lived with the family for 4 years.
Doug was a home builder. He worked for Harold Merrill and later with Rick Bowie before becoming self-employed. The last home he built was for himself on the lake in Winthrop. Doug ended his career after working 22 years in the Maintenance department at L.L. Bean.
Doug was a dedicated son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was a member of the Jaycees for many years. Doug and Maryrose loved vacationing in Aruba and Florida and spending time with their children, grandchildren, and friends. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and singing the oldies as he tinkered on street rods in the garage. He once tried his hand at brewing and bottling homemade beer and root beer, both of which exploded. He continued until he perfected them.
He loved his family and friends and hosted many parties and family reunions at the lake. He enjoyed boating and teaching his children and grandchildren to waterski. Some of the kids' fondest memories at camp include the water slide he built for them and him pushing them very high on the tire swings.
