Douglas Freshner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fausett Family Funeral Homes-Manistique on Jan. 28, 2026.
Douglas Richard Freshner, age 83, of Manistique, Michigan, passed away on January 24, 2026.

Douglas was born on March 11, 1942. He earned his bachelor's degree from Milwaukee College, where he studied communications. His passion for storytelling, media, and connection carried throughout his life and career.

Douglas worked extensively in media and communications, serving as a director and engaging in public relations work. Over the years, he collaborated with institutions including UW Oshkosh, UW Milwaukee, and UW Madison, and was deeply involved in videography, sports coverage, events, and historical projects within the UW system. His work was not just a career, but a true passion. He earned many awards over his career such as two National Communicator Awards, and a Hermes Gold award in 2013 for a documentary.

He spent the greater part of his life in Wisconsin, particularly in the Milwaukee area, before relocating to the Manistique area in 2009. In retirement, Douglas still found joy in videography as well as woodworking, taking walks, continuing to learn new things, and remaining curious about the world around him. He especially loved his dogs, Shadow and Bubbles, who brought him great comfort and companionship.

Douglas was married to the love of his life Elizabeth Gustafson on August 10, 1982, in Decorah, Iowa. She survives him. He is also survived by his stepson, Joe (Kerry) Hill, of Glendale, Wisconsin. His grandchildren, Maddie, Joey, Owen, Aidan, and India. Along with special friends Annie Saqr, Susan and Lance Neddow, and their daughters Jessica Shamel, and Melanie Neddow.
