James Jackson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Skradski Family Funeral Home - Escanaba on Feb. 19, 2026.
James "Jumbo" Lee Jackson, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Manistique on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 with his loving family by his side.

Jim was born on January 10, 1937, to Mary (Mersnick) and Joseph Jackson in Manistique. He graduated from Manistique High School in 1955. After high school, he sailed on the ore boats, an experience he often spoke about with a smile-especially recalling how well he was fed while working on the ships. He later proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Following his honorable discharge, Jim attended barber school in Detroit. After completing barber school, he opened his own barber shop in Manistique, where he became a familiar and friendly face in the community. It was through the barbershop business that he met the love of his life, Janice. Their shared hard work and dedication grew into a lifelong partnership and a marriage that lasted 46 wonderful years. He later owned and operated Christy's Bar until selling the business in 1994 and beginning his well-earned retirement.

Jim truly loved the outdoors. He found great joy in fishing, hunting, and tending to his vegetable gardens. He especially enjoyed fly fishing at the Carr Ponds and fishing off the pier in Grand Marais with his son, Jason. Those quiet days on the water were among some of his most treasured times.

Jim was a proud family man who cherished moments with his loved ones. He was grateful to have his son and daughter-in-law nearby, which allowed him to watch and cherish the growth of his three grandsons. Generous with his time, his love, and anything he had to offer, he gave his all to his family and was a kind, steady presence-always ready with a story, a helping hand, or quiet support.

His spirit lives on in the hearts of his loving and loyal wife of 46 years, Janice; his devoted son, Jason (Laura) Jackson and his three beloved grandchildren: McKabe Swanson, Kavin Jackson, and Kaiver Jackson; and his special nephew, Russell Jackson.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruthie and Denise; his brothers, Russell, Ron, and Joe; and their spouses.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring.

Jim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, and his quiet kindness that touched many lives.
