Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southern Indiana ChapelDouglas Patrick Grether, 61, New Albany, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026. Born on June 23, 1964, in New Albany, Doug was the son of James and Dolores "Gerry" (Jones) Grether. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a proud member of his community, known not only for his deep faith but also for the warmth he extended to all those he met.
A steadfast believer, Doug loved Jesus with all his heart. He was an active and dedicated member of Emmaus Road Church in Clarksville, where he served the younger generation by teaching in the Children's Ministry. His faith was evident in the way he connected with people and in the kindness he showed to those around him.
Doug's professional life included a lengthy and fulfilling career at Vistar in Louisville, from which he retired after 30 years of employment. In addition to his career, Doug had a passion for the great outdoors. He was an avid camper, kayaker, and fisherman, spending countless hours embracing nature's beauty. His adventurous spirit and love for life were reflected in his friendly and outgoing personality, characteristics that drew others to him easily.
In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Duane Grether. He is survived by his wife, Laura (Belles) Heeke Grether, and his son, Richard Grether (Autum Hunter). He leaves behind a wonderful blend of step-children, including Carrie Parragin (Dustin), Amy Heeke, and Josh Heeke (Alicia), and grandchildren: Mariah, Austin, Cassie, Dylan, and Lucas.
Doug was also a proud brother to his siblings Randy Grether (Tamara), Mark Grether (Diana), and Geri Grether-Cook. He held a special bond with his nephew, Randy Grether, Jr., who was raised by his parents and like a brother to him. In addition, he is remembered fondly by his brothers-in-law, Grant Belles (Jackie) and Gerald Belles, and sister-in-law, Mona Willis (Josh), alongside numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will carry forth his memory.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, located at 3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany, and will continue on Wednesday after 9:00 a.m. His funeral service will commence at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial following at Friendship Cemetery.
