Douglas Byron Kunert passed away on November 19, 2022.
Doug was born on January 18, 1952 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Dale and Darlene Kunert. Doug and his two brothers grew up on a farm just east of Humboldt, Iowa. Doug loved growing up on the farm. As a child, he enjoyed roaming the hills and riverbanks. Fishing, hunting, and riding go-carts and motorcycles were some of his favorite childhood activities. He loved spending time with his brothers and cousins.
Doug graduated from Humboldt High School in 1970. He attended and graduated from Iowa State University in 1974. After graduation, Doug began a career in banking/finance, which included stops in Manchester, Iowa; Hampton, Iowa and Mason City, Iowa; before ultimately settling in Johnston, Iowa for the past thirty-three years.
Doug and Linda loved to travel, taking frequent trips in the United States and Europe. Doug never shied away from posing for a goofy photo or the opportunity to practice his "patience" during Doug and Linda's hunts to find the perfect Christmas ornaments to represent their travels.
Doug loved the outdoors, whether riding his motorcycle, gardening, reading or just sitting on the deck enjoying a good bourbon while rooting on the Cyclones. He had fond memories of spending time with his kids, whether it was fishing the Canadian waters or taking motorcycle trips to Sturgis, or just chatting on the deck with his wife, kids and grandkids.
Doug was very thankful of Linda, who helped him return to his faith.
Doug is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Linda; three children Matthew, Mitchell and Michael; three step children, Rachel Parenza (John), Joseph Broich (Olivia) and Marissa Broich; and four grandchildren, Annabelle, Hayden, June and Ada. He is also survived by his two brothers, William and Steven. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank Dr. Zeeshan Jawa at Mission Cancer and Dr. Jonas Paludo of Mayo Clinic - hematology department.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22nd, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Urbandale, Iowa from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Services will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd, at 10:00 a.m. at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will be at Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt, Iowa.

I have so many fond memories of growing up from the time we spent at the farm with our cousins. Doug a year older than I, Bill a year younger than I and Steve closer in age to my younger brothers. So many formative life experiences from those years. In the end, all we're left with are our memories of the people, places, experiences we've had. While it is certainly a sad time. I was blessed to be a part of the Kunert family.
