Douglas Joe Lewis, 58, formerly of Twelve Mile, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly at 10:59 a.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in Logansport.
Born June 12, 1967, in Logansport, Indiana, he was the son of Edward Joe and Betty Gail (Coffing) Lewis.
Doug graduated from the special education program at Logansport High School. He was an avid sports fan, and he LOVED IU Basketball and both the Chicago and South Bend Cubs baseball teams. He especially loved to talk trivia about his favorite teams, and if given enough time, he could convince even the most loyal Purdue fan why Bobby Knight was the greatest basketball coach of all time. He enjoyed bowling and working at home on the farm with his parents, especially when his dad would help him hitch up the horses for a carriage ride around the farm or in the Twelve Mile parade. As a child, he loved Cub and Boy Scouts and throughout the years, his time working at Peak Community Services and his many years at Camp Millhouse.
With his strong work ethic, Doug spent countless hours around home on his John Deere lawnmower, whether he was supposed to be or not, always making sure the grass was always kept up to his standards! He enjoyed raising his cows each year, being proud of the fact that he could help provide food for the family, even though that did sometimes mean he had to deal with the chickens! Doug had a loving and caring heart and welcomed everyone with a warm embracing hug or a very strong handshake. Doug loved to work word-searches, and he would always travel with his two most important books, a word puzzle book and his Bible.
Doug was a lifelong member of the Metea Baptist Church. He had a strong faith and not only loved to go to church, but he loved to tell others about his faith. Doug studied the Bible and could recount all of the lessons he learned with citations...making sure you knew where to find the information yourself. Along with his parents, many evenings each month were centered around church activities, like going to Cowboy Church, or bowling, with the difficult task of sometimes figuring out how to work in Doug's two favorite activities.
Doug was the center of his parents' life. Their home was centered around God, around their son, and their love for others. The Lewis home was always a welcoming place where hot meals were always homemade and started with prayer, the pies were never out of a box, and the work was never left undone--especially the grass being mowed! Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents, but he is survived a legacy of love that was felt from the Lewis home and will be remembered by the family and community for years to come.
He is survived by three aunts, Nina Warner-Lynch, Rochester; Joan Coffing, Westfield; and Roxann (Marvin) Murphy, Rochester; and several cousins, especially Twila (Dave) Collins, Denver, who made sure Doug’s needs were always met since his parents’ illnesses and death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana, with Pastor Cole Westwood officiating. Burial will follow in Metea Cemetery, Metea, Indiana.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home.
