LACONIA ---- Douglas Burlon McGowan, 82, of Shore Drive, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Laconia Rehabilitation Center.
Doug was born on February 21, 1943, in Laconia, NH, the son of the late Police Commissioner, Burlon F. McGowan and Kay S. (Krauz) McGowan.
Doug graduated from Laconia High School in 1961 and served as an engineer in the US Army from 1962-1964. He was a member of the VFW. A life-time resident of Laconia, he worked as a lineman for the telephone companies for over 28 years.
Doug was also an avid antiques collector/seller, alongside his business partner and mother, Kay. After his retirement, he worked in local consignment shops doing what he loved best, dealing antiques and socializing with the locals. Doug and Sheila spent their golden years traveling to many countries across the globe, eventually sharing their love of travel with their children. Ireland was a well-loved stop for the family. Having the "Gift of Gab" Doug was able to make a lifetime friendship with anyone he met. During his travel adventures, Doug would often introduce himself to foreign strangers as, "Hi, I'm Doug from out of town."
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Sheila McGowan; son Patrick McGowan and his wife Emma, of Somersworth, NH; daughter Kellie Loring and her husband Nick, of Londonderry, NH; and grandchildren Parker and Madison Loring.
A Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated on Friday, June 6, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the St. Andre Bessette Parish - Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia, NH.
A Graveside Service with military honors will be held following the service at Union Cemetery, Academy Street, Laconia, NH.
