Douglas Michaud Obituary

Published by James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home on Apr. 23, 2018.
Douglas Michaud, age 71, passed away in his Walpole, Massachusetts home on Monday, April 23, 2018. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on February 21, 1947, he was the son of Armand and Mary (Bomba) Michaud. Doug graduated from Central Catholic High School with the Class of 1964, where he was a member of the Track and Field Team, Sodality, and was named the Class Valedictorian. After graduation, Doug spent a semester at Georgetown University before graduating from Holy Cross in 1968, where he organized Antioch Weekend Retreats, which became the foundation of his ministries. Following his graduation from Holy Cross, Doug traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to join the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and in 1971, he moved to Uniondale, New York, taking the position of youth minister at Saint Martha's Parish. Doug married his beloved wife, Patricia M. Hand, on June 17, 1972 in Farmington, Michigan. The young couple returned to Uniondale, New York, where Doug continued his ministries. In 1974, he began working at Saint Edward the Confessor Church in Syosset, New York and in 1975 he returned to his education, taking classes at Saint John University. Doug earned his Master's Degree in 1978 and later that same year enrolled in a doctoral program at Fordham University. In 1981, Doug moved his young family to Blue Point, New York and took a position with Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon, New York. Doug left the State of New York in 1985, moving his family to Walpole, Massachusetts, taking the youth minister and the director of religious education positions at Saint Joseph's Church in Needham. Beginning in 1988, Doug started organizing retreats for various parishes, including Saint Joseph's in Needham, Precious Blood in Dover, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Seekonk. Doug took a new path starting in 1992, taking a full-time position with Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire, teaching Theology. In 1998, he moved closer to home, taking a position with Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, where he developed his own curriculum, focusing on Biblical Themes in Contemporary Films. He will always be remembered for his Fun Friday Classes, giving away candy, donuts, and bagels to his students. He retired from Bishop Feehan in 2011, however continued teaching his ministries through various speeches, praying every morning that he could complete his mission of making Jesus known to all. In addition to his ministries, Doug also worked as a limousine driver for Cascio Limo Service in Southboro. While Doug moved around during his younger years, he remained a true Boston Sports fan, always keeping up with the Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether in the White Mountains, on Seabrook Beach, or the beaches of Cape Cod. Back at home, Doug loved spending time in his own yard, cultivating his flower gardens, taking in the local wildlife, or caring for his parrot, Skittles. As a dedicated family man, he adored spending time with those he loved, often using his great sense of humor or a great quote to show his care. Beloved husband of Patricia M. (Hand) Michaud. Loving father of Peter M. Michaud of Norfolk, Bernadette M. Adamo and her husband Andrea of Cambridge, Claire M. Michaud of Walpole, Annie M. Michaud of Walpole, Patrick M. Michaud of Norfolk, and Timothy M. Michaud of Walpole. Cherished grandfather of Mario S. Adamo, Francesco D. Adamo, and Elisa Maria Adamo all of Cambridge. Devoted son of Mary (Bomba) Michaud of Lawrence and the late Armand Michaud. Brother of Paul Michaud of Sarasota, Florida, Lawrence Michaud of North Andover, Robin Michaud of Salem, New Hampshire, Cindy Michaud of Haverhill, Sandra Ruscak of Methuen, Trudy Lawler of Hooksett, New Hampshire, and Tim Michaud of Winchester. I know Doug has now heard the words Well done good and faithful servant. He is resting in the arms of a loving Father words we heard from Doug over the years at St. Edwards in Syosset.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he Rest In peace.

Doug was one of the most deeply spiritual individuals that I have ever met. He was filled with a love for others and a true generosity of spirit. I have been associated with the Jesuits for forty years in a layman capacity. I have met hundreds of people with a strong religious orientation but Doug had a truly special dimension to him. My wife Daisy and I wish the entire Michaud family the very best in their time of sorrow.

Dear Patty and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I would not be the man I am today without Doug's work at St. Martha's. I will always be grateful for the lessons I learned of love, family and service from him.

Thanks you for supporting him in his work and sharing him and your family with us.

May God bless you at this time and forever hold both of you in his heart.

Patty,Doug inspired me to pursue ministry back at Saint Martha's in Uniondale. I got a masters degree from Fordham and worked in Youth ministry for 5 years. Antioch weekends were a constant for me as were Emmaus weekends based on the Sunday night meetings Doug led. You and Doug established how a married couple in pursuit of Christian community can impact and inspire others. My condolences on Doug's passing Tom Darcy.

Doug,

You were always a spiritual guided to me. I can still see a hundred teenagers as you led us in Sing alleluia. We were all so blessed for having you in our lives. To the family, may God watch over you through this time. Even with the love that Doug is with God, It is still difficult for you to not have him present. I pray that God hold you a little tighter, to comfort the sorrow. You all hold a special place in my heart, and I have brothers in Christ because of it. I will never forget his phrase of "how about a song" usually said just before I'd share. I think it was to get everyone ready for my long sharing. But Doug loved me and strengthened my love for God. I hope that I can pass this on by being there for all of you.

In our lives there are very few people, with perhaps the exception of our families, who have the ability to impact our lives in a life changing way. In you Doug, we lost a man who God placed in my path and the path of so many others, a man who brought me to my faith, who not only spoke to me of Gods love, but showed me that love. A great witness of Jesus in a world that still remains in such desperate need of Him. As our youth minister back in Syosset NY you helped us to see God as real and helped me to believe that I was loved and worthy of that love. Today I am blessed that I got to tell you in person not long ago the impact you made on me and my life. You have a legacy of so many who also took on that same calling. I am blessed that many in my youth ministry program got to meet you and here you speak, as well as my own children. I thank God that you were a part of my life and so instrumental in helping me become whom I am. To your wonderful family my sympathies and prayers are with you all in this loss. Heaven is surely a little brighter today!

Dougy, Dougy, Dougy

Sad to hear your are no longer with us. Ii would have seen you one way or the other. Maybe you can set up an Antioch weekend in Purgatory.
Now that your gone, I'm glad I cancelled your debt to me all those many years ago. Be strong, Patti, as you are. I'm sure Doug and his memory will strengthen you from the great beyond.

If I make it to the reunion, I will definitely drop by to say hello. I will miss the banter and kidding and always shot my way. He was talking about about how Peter almost got lit up by lightning when he walked the Appelacian trail and people still get a shock when they come within 3 feet from him. Or when Patti and I went out to buy a fridge; when we cme very close to a purchase, I commented, "i'M Sure Doug will like it. Doug ... dog - you remember the rest.

Over the years I've taken many pies in the face. Many thanks to Doug for inuring me to them all early on.

I'm still in Thailand. did 40 months in prison here. Came out spiritually much stronger for it. but as my venerable grandfather used to say many years ago, "I'm movin slow but goin fast. - Not as fast as doug though. r.i.p.

Patty and children, our hearts break for you. Our prayers are with you. These words Doug read at the end of every Antioch Retreat still echo in my heart, "And it was in Antioch that they were first called Christians."
Thousands were brought to the Lord by your husband, father. For 50 years Doug tilled the soil of the Lord's field and the harvest of believers is 100 fold! Thanks to Doug so many young people came to believe in Jesus Christ, now those young people are in their 20 - 60's! And the next generation has been brought to the Lord through him. The blessings abound - God Bless Doug! May he celebrate in the Lord's loving embrace forever.
