Douglas Robert Potter, 82, of
Tyrone, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on March 4th, surrounded by laughter and stories of his life shared by his family.
Born on March 27th, 1944, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Doug lived a life marked by vigor, wisdom, and deep, unwavering devotion to those he loved. A proud United States Army veteran, Doug served his country for six years as part of the 11th Airborne Division and was honorably discharged in May of 1968. He carried that same spirit of discipline and service into every aspect of his life.
Doug was a hardworking and dedicated man who built a long career through both skill and perseverance. He worked for Eastern Airlines for 22 years and later for Rockwell Collins for 23 years. Whether at work or at home, Doug was known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and the pride he took in doing things well; especially when it came to the home construction projects that brought his family together for cookouts and lasting memories.
Above all else, Doug cherished his family. His devotion was evident in the home he and his wife Beth built together. He had a deep love for the outdoors and believed the best way to experience life was outside: exploring, building, and working with your hands. His grandchildren grew up under his watchful encouragement, spending countless days swimming, riding bikes, exploring the woods, watching him build, and helping in the garden. Winter brought one of his most beloved traditions: taking his grandchildren skiing each year, a tradition he faithfully continued until he became paraplegic.
Even after that life-changing challenge, Doug's spirit for the outdoors remained unshaken. Though his body slowed, his encouragement for his family to chase life never did. He continued to urge those he loved to work hard, stay curious, and spend time outdoors appreciating the world around them. Doug also had a love of travel, and he and Beth enjoyed venturing on many cruises throughout their retirement. He was well known for challenging his family to be the best they could be and to remain strong and determined in the face of life's challenges.
Doug had a special way with children. They seemed naturally drawn to him, and he to them. Whether wandering barefoot through the grass, tending the garden, taking them for rides on his chair, or simply showing them something small and wonderful in the world around them, Doug delighted in sharing life's simple joys. He was blessed to share those same joys with his two great-grandchildren.
His legacy lives on in the strong values he passed down: love for family, deep respect for hard work, curiosity about the natural world, and the belief that life is best lived outside with the people you love.
Doug is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Beth, who faithfully cared for him at home until his final breath. He is also survived by his siblings Patricia Puini, Alexander "Sandy" Potter (Patricia), Jeanette Lapsley, David Potter (Brenda), Phillip Potter (Barbara), and Anne Miller (Robert); his children Rhonda Madusky (Joe), Diona Potter (Chris), Sheila Meadows, Troy Adams (Crystal), and Marti Adams; his grandchildren Colton Kearney, Brittany Fitch (WO1 Nathan Fitch), Hayley Bailey (Austin), Chase Kearney, CPT Avery Rhys Adams (Abby), Aiden English, Gabriel Adams, and Reagan Adams; and his great-grandchildren Asher Fitch and Magnolia Adams.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Potter; his mother, Ellen Potter; and his great-granddaughter, Evelyn Fitch.
A memorial service will be held on April 11, 2026, at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. and the service to follow at 3:00 p.m., to honor Doug's life and legacy.
Doug will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering love for family, his deep devotion to his beautiful wife, and the lasting legacy of lessons he left for those who loved him.
