Douglas Roewe Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Foothills Cremation and Funeral Service - Golden on Dec. 30, 2025.
Douglas August Roewe, 'Doug', born on April 23, 1953, in St. Louis, MO passed away on December 15,

2025 at his home in Evergreen, CO. Surviving are his brother, Dan(Ida) and sisters, Donna(Bruce) Bader and Connie White. He also leaves his nephews and nieces, Jason, Allyson, Lindsay, Melissa, Matthew, Alexandra and J.D. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, William August and Wanda 'Dave' Davis Roewe. Doug grew up on the Illinois side of the St. Louis, MO region. After a modest academic record in his first 19 years he would head west, enrolling at the University of Utah. It is there Doug's talents began to shine, graduating with a Masters in Meteorology with honors. Always fascinated by the weather since he was a little kid, routinely updating his mom and dad on the current barometric

pressure and what was coming our way. By the age of 10 he was most familiar with all the various cloud

formations and what they indicated. We think back to all those 'C's' in spelling he must have got on his

report cards but could spell words such as Cumulonimbus and Nimbostratus in the blink of an eye. He

was a gifted and very learned man for those that knew him.

After graduating from the University of Utah, he was offered a choice research position, unusual for a

new graduate, by the National Center for Atmospheric Research NCAR) of Boulder, CO, where he wouldwork for many years. He would leave NCAR where he contributed to pioneering the use of satellite imagery in order to forecast and study weather patterns. In the end he would spend his last 18 years at the family business, Missouri Pipe Fittings Company, as the software architect till his recent retirement.

Doug lived his last 38 years as a passionate caretaker of his property in Evergreen, CO. He would quickly carve out a discreet hiking trail amongst its rocky slopes, Ponderosa pines, Douglas firs, spruce and his beloved grove of Aspens. Doug also had a way with the birds, chickadees that would perch on his hat and humming birds on his fingers. His extended family would walk this trail an untold number of times over the years, including his parents well into their seventies. Despite his parents many travels and experiences, they found no greater comfort, peace of mind you might say, than sitting on their son's deck overlooking the landscape. Doug would maintain this trail to his dying days.

Over the years Doug would seldom if ever burden his family and friends with the curve balls that would

come his way, preferring to handle them privately. Doug simply preferred the company of winged and

four legged friends, his natural world to that of people. We can all be grateful he left this small

microcosm of forest a better place.

Doug we now envision you sitting down with your mentor, Carl Sagan, getting answers on the origins of

that 'pale blue dot' we call home and the greater wonders of our universe. Your family prays that

churning pragmatic mind of yours is now resting in peace.

Doug's life will be celebrated privately with his family, near a place he cherished in his beloved

mountains in Colorado.

Doug was my best friend and he often reminded me that I was his. We had many great times together over the 15 years of friendship, including most recently while attending a Christmas special at the Broomfield Symphony Orchestra the evening of December 14th. I am blessed to have spent that recent time with him. He has left a void in my life that will never be filled, like that empty chair at the dining room table, reserved always for him. The talks, the laughs, the grumpiness, the advice, the help, the moments shared. I miss it all. I miss him dearly.

Knowing Doug meant sharing his love of nature, science, animals and the Universe. His curiosity had no bounds and he was always open to new ideas and concepts. My friend was always kind, always honest, always true to himself. I will dearly miss our conversations and sharing books. The world is a lot dimmer without Doug. I love you, buddy.

Doug, Kelvin's mom gave me a memento that says "friends are our chosen family". Your friends still love you. You will be missed for the particular and special times you shared with each of us. Until we meet again...

We were Doug´s neighbors for many years. He was a gentle, interesting, kind, brilliant man. He took our grandson on a hike to experience the beauty of the trail he had built behind his house. His many improvements on his property included the weather gizmo in the front yard and a new fashioned mailbox. He was excited to show off the remodeled kitchen that his niece designed several years ago. This acreage was his most loved possession.
We will miss him.

Doug was a close friend of mine for 3 decades. I will miss talking about science and nature and his astute observations about the world we shared. Now he is one with the cosmos which surely makes him very happy. Goodbye my friend.
